We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear brother who has strayed from the path of righteousness due to the sin of fornication and has entered into an ungodly union. The Scriptures are clear that as believers, we are called to holiness and to be set apart from the ways of the world. The apostle Paul warns us in 2 Corinthians 6:14-15, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever?" This brother has not only engaged in sexual immorality but has also bound himself in marriage to someone who does not share his faith in Christ, creating a union that is not pleasing to God.
We must also address the seriousness of adultery, for Jesus Himself said in Matthew 5:32, "But I tell you that everyone who puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery." If this brother’s wife was previously married and not biblically divorced, then this marriage is built upon a foundation of sin. The Lord does not take these matters lightly, for He is a God of justice and holiness.
Yet, we serve a God of mercy and restoration, as seen in the book of Hosea. Just as God commanded Hosea to take back his unfaithful wife as a picture of His love for Israel, so too does He call sinners to repentance and restoration. Hosea 2:19-20 declares, "I will betroth you to me forever. Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness, in justice, in loving kindness, and in compassion. I will even betroth you to me in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord." This is the heart of our Father, He longs to restore this brother to Himself, but restoration can only come through repentance and a turning away from sin.
We must also pray for this brother’s wife, that her heart would be softened to the gospel of Jesus Christ. If she is not a believer, she must come to know the Lord as her Savior, for only then can their marriage be brought into alignment with God’s will. If she is a believer but has been living in sin, she too must repent and seek the Lord’s forgiveness.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We lift up this brother who has strayed from Your path and entered into a union that does not honor You. Lord, we ask that You would convict his heart of the sin of fornication and adultery, and that You would grant him the strength to repent and turn away from this ungodly marriage. Father, we know that You are faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). We pray that this brother would humble himself before You, seek Your face, and walk in obedience to Your Word.
Lord, we also pray for his wife. If she does not know You, we ask that You would draw her to Yourself, that she may be saved and become a godly helpmeet for her husband. If she is a believer, we pray that You would convict her of any sin in her life and lead her to repentance. Father, we ask that You would break the chains of sin in both of their lives and restore them to a right relationship with You.
We declare that Your will shall be done in this situation. We pray that this brother would come to understand the seriousness of being unequally yoked and that he would seek Your guidance for his marriage. If it is Your will for this marriage to be dissolved, we pray that You would grant him the wisdom and courage to do what is right in Your eyes. If it is Your will for them to remain together, we pray that You would transform their hearts and their marriage to reflect Your love and holiness.
Lord, we ask that You would surround this brother with godly counsel and accountability. Raise up men and women of faith who will speak truth into his life and encourage him to walk in righteousness. Protect him from the lies of the enemy and the temptations of the flesh. Strengthen his faith and help him to stand firm in Your promises.
We thank You, Father, for Your unfailing love and mercy. We trust in Your power to restore and redeem this situation for Your glory. May this brother come to know You more deeply and walk in the fullness of Your will for his life. In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
We encourage this brother to seek the Lord with all his heart, to study His Word, and to surround himself with believers who will hold him accountable. The road to restoration may not be easy, but it is worth it. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Let him take comfort in the fact that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), and that His grace is sufficient for every trial (2 Corinthians 12:9).
If this brother has not already done so, we urge him to confess his sins before the Lord and seek His forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 assures us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." There is no sin too great for God’s forgiveness, but repentance is necessary for restoration. Let him also seek the counsel of his pastor or a trusted spiritual leader who can guide him through this difficult time.
We must also remind him that salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 declares, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!" If this brother has truly been born again, he must cling to Christ and His finished work on the cross. The blood of Jesus is the only thing that can cleanse him from his sins and restore him to a right relationship with God.
Let us continue to stand in the gap for this brother, praying fervently that he would return to the Lord and walk in His ways. May God’s will be done in his life, and may His name be glorified through this situation.
