We come before the throne of grace with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear brother in Christ who has strayed from the path of righteousness through the sin of fornication and entered into an adulterous marriage. The Word of God is clear that such unions do not align with His holy design, for He commands us in 2 Corinthians 6:14, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" This brother must understand that his current marriage stands in direct violation of God’s perfect will, and we must pray fervently for his repentance and restoration.
The Lord’s heart toward His wayward children is one of relentless love and mercy, as we see in Hosea 2:19-20, where He declares, "I will betroth you to me forever. Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness, in justice, in loving kindness, and in compassion. I will even betroth you to me in faithfulness; and you shall know Yahweh." These verses reveal God’s desire to restore His people to a place of purity and covenant faithfulness. Yet this restoration can only come through repentance and a turning away from sin. We must pray that this brother’s heart would be broken over his disobedience, that he would confess his sin before the Lord, and that he would seek to honor God in his marriage or make the difficult but necessary decisions to align his life with Scripture.
The sin of fornication and adultery is not to be taken lightly, for the Bible warns in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, "Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." This brother must recognize that his body belongs to the Lord, and any sexual union outside of God’s design for marriage between one man and one woman is a grievous offense against Him. We must pray that the Holy Spirit would convict him deeply and lead him to repentance.
If this brother is truly born again, he must also confront the reality of being unequally yoked. The Scriptures are clear that believers are not to marry unbelievers, as this creates a division in the most intimate of human relationships. In 1 Corinthians 7:39, Paul writes, "A wife is bound by law for as long as her husband lives; but if the husband is dead, she is free to be married to whomever she desires, only in the Lord." Marriage is a sacred covenant, and it must be entered into with a fellow believer who shares the same faith and commitment to Christ. If this brother’s spouse is not a believer, he must seek the Lord’s wisdom and strength to either lead her to Christ or make the painful but necessary decision to separate, as Scripture permits in such cases (1 Corinthians 7:15).
Let us pray now with hearts full of compassion and truth:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts burdened for this brother who has strayed from Your path. Lord, we know that Your desire is for repentance and restoration, and we ask that You would draw him back to Yourself with cords of lovingkindness. Break his heart over the sin of fornication and adultery, and grant him the courage to confess and turn away from this disobedience. Father, we pray that You would open his eyes to the reality of being unequally yoked and give him the strength to honor You in his marriage or make the difficult decisions necessary to align his life with Your Word.
Lord, we ask that You would pour out Your mercy upon him, as You promise in Hosea 2:23, "I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy; then I will say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people!’ And they shall say, ‘You are my God!’" Restore this brother to a place of intimacy with You, and let him know the fullness of Your love and forgiveness. Surround him with godly counsel and accountability, and lead him into a marriage that honors You, whether that be through the transformation of his current union or a new beginning under Your guidance.
Father, we also pray for his spouse, that You would draw her to salvation if she does not know You. Soften her heart to the gospel and let her see the truth of Your Word. If it is Your will for them to remain together, we ask that You would sanctify their marriage and make it a testimony to Your grace. But if separation is necessary, give this brother the strength to walk in obedience, trusting in Your provision and protection.
Lord, we know that without You, this brother cannot find true restoration. We ask that You would work powerfully in his life, breaking the chains of sin and setting him free to walk in the fullness of Your purpose. May he experience the depth of Your forgiveness and the joy of Your presence once again. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved and through whom we have access to Your throne of grace. Amen.
To this brother, we say: Do not despair, for the Lord’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). His love for you is unchanging, and His desire is to restore you to a place of right relationship with Him. Confess your sin, turn away from it, and seek godly counsel to help you navigate this difficult season. The road to restoration may be painful, but it is worth it, for the Lord promises in Joel 2:25, "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten." Trust in Him, lean on His strength, and let Him lead you into a future that honors Him. You are not alone, for the Lord is with you, and His people are praying for you.
