Most would think idolatry means worshpping a statue of a false God instead of God.But I'd say it applys to other things. When someone says they "need" coffee to make it through the day, instead of saying ,God could give them energy to make through the day, isn't that showing a lack of faith in God, that they feel they "need" the coffee, that God alone wouldn't be enough?Anytime someone will do anything for something, put it above everything else, and depend on it instead of God, wouldn't that be idolatry?. Even money.I see people sell out their morals for money, then try to justify it.They'll vote for someone who backs ungodly causes, thinking that party is better for their financial cause. But isn't that not having enough faith in God to provide that they have to sell out to an ungodly person? The Antichrist, no one can buy or sell unless they take the mark. But does God "justify" that? "Whosoever worships the beast, or takes the mark on their right hand or forehead, the same will be tormented in fire in the presence of the Lamb .And the smoke of their torment rises up forever and ever."So is idolatry just praying to a statue?Doesn't seem so. Could be anything you put your trust in over God.
