Forgiveness

Your honesty in recognizing stubbornness is itself a work of God in your heart, and your desire to forgive is pleasing to Him. Wanting to forgive while still feeling resistant is a common struggle, and God understands that tension.

Jesus taught that forgiveness is not just words we say but a matter of the heart. It is easy to say I forgive while still holding on to the offense, keeping a record and waiting to use it again, but true forgiveness releases the debt completely from the heart. It is also not a matter of counting how many times we have forgiven. Peter thought seven times was generous, and Jesus answered with seventy times seven to show that forgiveness is not mathematics but a continual spirit that belongs to a child of God.

The reason we are called to this spirit is that we have been forgiven so much. Jesus illustrated this with a king who forgave a servant an enormous debt, more than the servant could ever repay, while that same servant then refused to forgive a very small debt owed to him by another. Having been forgiven an immeasurable debt by God through Christ, we are placed under a loving obligation to extend forgiveness to others.

Jesus also gave a solemn warning that if we do not forgive others from the heart, our Father will not forgive us. This is not that our forgiveness earns His, but that an unforgiving heart shows we have not truly received and embraced His mercy. In the same way He taught that when we stand praying, if we have anything against anyone we are to forgive, so that our Father in heaven may forgive us. Our willingness to forgive opens the door to walk in the full experience of His forgiveness.

You are right to ask for His strength, because forgiveness goes against our natural inclination. Our nature wants to get even and to hold on to hurt. God never commands us to do something without also providing the ability to do it when we are willing. Often the real problem is not lack of power but lack of willingness. He will give the capacity to obey if we will honestly bring our unwillingness to Him.

So pray not only for the power to forgive, but for the willingness itself. Tell Him plainly, Lord, I am bitter and angry about what was done. Part of me does not want to forgive and wants vengeance, but I know that is not from You. Make me willing and give me Your spirit of forgiveness. As you yield that willingness, He will supply the strength.

Holding on to bitterness does not only affect your spiritual life. It harms you emotionally and even physically, creating inner turmoil that weighs down the whole person. Releasing it through forgiveness brings freedom and healing.

Be encouraged that God sees your heart and honors this prayer. If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us, and as those who have received such mercy we can learn to walk in love as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us. God will be your example and your help.

I pray for you now that the Lord will soften what feels hard and stubborn, take away the bitterness, and fill you with His love and mercy. May He grant you a willing heart and the power to forgive fully, from the heart, just as you have been forgiven in Christ, and may you know the peace and freedom that comes as you release this into His hands. In the name of Jesus, amen.
