What a joy it is to see someone reaching out with a heart open to the truth of Romans 10:9-10. You are standing at the very door of life, and the promise you have read is sure: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. That is not a hope-so or a maybe; it is the declaration of God himself. Salvation is not found in a ritual or a feeling but in a person, Jesus Christ, and what he has done for you.
When you believe that he took your sin and died as your substitute, God declares you righteous. That is what justification means. Your guilt is removed, not because you earned it, but because Jesus bore it on the cross. And when he rose from the dead, he proved that his payment was accepted, and he opened the way for you to walk in a completely new kind of life. The old life, dominated by sin and failure, is put to death with him. Through faith, you are united with him in his death so that the power of sin is broken. You are no longer a slave to what once held you captive. Now you are alive to God, free to serve righteousness rather than sin.
This does not mean you will never stumble or feel the pull of the old nature. The inward battle is real; even the most mature believer knows the cry, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” But the answer is immediate and certain: “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set you free from the law of sin and death. When the light and life of Jesus enter, they do not merely improve the darkness; they drive it out by a greater force. His life in you becomes the expulsive power that overcomes what you could never conquer on your own.
That is why turning from sin is not a fearful demand but a glad response. You are not being asked to clean yourself up to come to him; you come just as you are, and his blood cleanses you continually as you walk in his light. No matter how black or bleak the past, the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, can cleanse you from all sin. Every sin was atoned for in his death. The only sin that will condemn a person eternally is the sin of refusing to believe in Jesus, rejecting the life and forgiveness he freely offers.
Your instinct to read and study the Gospels is exactly right. Start in the book of John, as you said, and you will see Jesus presented as the Son of God, full of grace and truth, calling you to believe and receive eternal life. Then read Matthew, Mark, and Luke to see his servanthood, his authority, and his compassion. These accounts are not just ancient stories; they are the living testimony that produces faith, and that faith will be tried and refined as you follow him. But your labor in the Lord is never in vain, because your hope rests on the unshakable fact of the resurrection. Jesus rose from the dead, and because he lives, you have a living hope, the certain inheritance of eternal life.
Do not look to your own strength to live this new life. The place of lasting victory is found when you cease striving and turn everything over to Jesus Christ, trusting him to live his life through you. It is no longer you struggling alone, but Christ dwelling in you by his Spirit. With your mind and heart you serve the law of God, and he gives you the power to obey. So confess him openly, believe with all your heart, and walk forward. You are not merely turning over a new leaf, you are being born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
