The command of the Gospel is not to seek, but to believe. A heart that turns itself to Christ if haply it may find Him is in a hopeful condition, yet the seeker remains disobedient to the great command. What is that command? "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved." The first command is not to pray, or search the Scriptures, or attend upon sermons, all these are natural duties, but the special command of the Gospel is, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ!" If you were obedient to this, you would at once cease to be a seeker and become a happy finder.
You quote Romans, and rightly so, for with the heart one believes and is justified. But see that you do not stop short with the outward facts. Many believe the Scriptures to be true and yet do not so believe in spirit and in truth as to believe unto salvation. The knowledge of the facts alone will not feed your spirit. You must accept Him who is the very essence of the doctrines. You must, indeed, by faith take Jesus Christ into yourself. Faith is the eye of the soul, the act of looking unto Jesus. In that act, by which we are saved, we look unto Him and are saved from the very ends of the earth.
This is the work of God, that you believe on Him whom He has sent. Nothing you can do will please God so much as for you, now, to believe in Jesus Christ. Do not come saying you cannot believe while you live in filthy lusts or cling to your sins. Confess your sin to the Lord, for Christ has come to pardon sin, and if you will not confess that you have transgressed, how can you believe in His power to pardon? Give up every plea beside. Lord, I am sin, but You are love. Lord, I am lost, but You have died. Dare you go to God and say, "Lord, help me to believe," and then take down your shutters and cheat people? The Lord will never help you to do anything of the sort.
Salvation is of the Lord in the planning, in the execution, in the application, and in its ultimate perfection. The Lord must make the unwilling willing, and bring the vile rebel to the feet of Jesus. Yet the command stands. It is His commandment that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ. If you are commanded to do it, do it. If salvation is promised when you believe, why then, believe, and have salvation. God commands you, will you disobey? There are grave dangers in lingering in the state of seeking, when the door stands open and the feast is spread. Let your food be His body broken for your sake, His blood poured out as atonement for your sin. Feed on the death of Christ, for the food of your faith is found there. We see Jesus crowned with glory and honor, and we hang our soul's salvation upon His being anointed of the Lord to be the Savior of men. This is the faith of the Gospel; if you do not believe it, you have not yet received the Gospel.
