For silent ones, Father . . thank You

How many are the silent prayers that rise to heaven like incense, and how great is the love of God who hears the cry of the heart before it ever reaches the lips. You have done well to bring these requests in silence, for the Lord does not need the clamor of words to know our need.

Consider the example of Christ Himself, who prayed not because He lacked power or needed to persuade the Father. He is not inferior to the Father, but of one will with Him. When He lifted His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me," He did so for the sake of the people standing by, that they might believe. He taught us by His own condescension, like a teacher lisping over the alphabet for the sake of the student. So your silent prayer, offered in the quiet of your heart, conforms to this pattern. It is not the loudness of the voice but the earnestness of the soul that pierces the clouds. Remember Hannah, whose voice was not heard, yet she accomplished all she wished because her heart cried out. Remember Abel, who prayed not only when silent, but even when dying, and his blood sent forth a cry more clear than a trumpet.

But do not think that because your prayer is silent, you may then rest as one who has finished a task. Prayer is a great weapon, and we have need of it early and by night, for each day the affairs of life are a fight, a tempest and a storm. There are many rocks in the marketplace, and the boat of our soul often strikes and is sunk. Therefore, we must make God propitious by prayer and supplication before we go forth. Yet do not place yourself in a situation to need only your own prayer. Even if you were to become as Paul, you would still have need of the prayers of the saints. Do not say, "What need have I of prayer?" On this account you need it, because you think you have no need. Do not exalt yourself, lest you be humbled.

And remember, the Lord looks for both our own part and God's part if we are to be duly saved. We need our own watchfulness joined to prayer. The Pharisee fasted and gave tithes, yet he was puffed up and made his prayer for display. But your silent sacrifice, this offering of a spiritual soul, is more acceptable than any outward show. Let your works speak where your voice is still, and let your life be a continual sacrifice of praise. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, withdrawing you from carnal confidences and keeping you steadfast in the faith, so that every false doctrine and every hidden snare of the enemy is shaken off like dust.

What you bring before God in silence is precious beyond words. Thank you for that heartfelt prayer, even the requests you cannot fully express. There is something deeply moving about lifting silent needs before the Father, and I want to encourage you in that.

True prayer always moves beyond our own circumstances. How easy it is to be consumed by physical needs, what we will eat, how we will get by, the pressures of daily life. But the Spirit lifts our gaze to the things of the Spirit, and that is where real peace is found. You are not meant to be ruled by bodily concerns. Yes, those needs exist, and God faithfully supplies them, but they are not to dominate your mind. When you come before God with the unspoken burdens of others, you are walking in the Spirit’s life and peace.

I believe one of the deepest needs in the body of Christ today is for more intercessors, people who will stand in the gap for the lost, the hurting, the struggling. That is exactly what you are doing. You bring before God needs you may not even fully understand, and that is a sacred ministry. The secret behind all genuine intercession is compassion, a love and burden for souls that mirrors the heart of Jesus. He ever lives to make intercession, and He invites you to share in that work.

When you do not know how to pray, take heart. The Spirit Himself helps you in your weakness and intercedes with groanings too deep for words. Those silent sighs of your heart are not lost. The One who searches the hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, and He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. So when you simply hold someone before the Lord with a deep, wordless groan, God Himself interprets it as perfect prayer. What a comfort that is.

Your silent requests are not ignored. God is not silent because He does not care. His delay is not His denial. He has spoken, and He will act. And while you wait, remember that Jesus Christ, risen and seated at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven, is interceding for you and for all those you bring before Him. He does not condemn. He represents you. He takes your case and presents it before the Father with love.

Do not underestimate the power of what you are doing behind the scenes. More things are wrought through prayer than the world will ever know. God is supplying all your needs according to His riches, and He is also touching the lives you can only hold in silence. Keep that burden for the lost. Keep groaning in the Spirit. Keep trusting that your quiet prayers are rising before the throne, mingled with the intercession of the Great High Priest who is holy, harmless, undefiled, and able to save to the uttermost all who come to God through Him.
