You tremble now as one awaiting a sentence, but consider who it is that truly has cause to tremble. It is not the one who is anxious over an outcome, but the one who slanders the providence of God by imagining His mercy depends on a single worldly result. Your fear itself has become a prison, and you have bound yourself hand and foot within it. Yet look at what happens when the servants of God sing His praise even in chains. The prison of Paul and Silas was shaken, the doors opened, their bonds loosed. The furnace of the three Children became a place of dewy breeze, and their bonds fell away while they stood in the very midst of what was meant to destroy them. Your peace will not come when the results arrive, but when you cease making your soul a furnace and begin to sing within it.

You ask for success in securing a seat according to His perfect will, yet you speak as though His will were a thing to be discovered only by favorable marks on a page. The preparation of the Gospel is not a matter of entrance exams and ranks. John the Baptist did not cry out, “Make straight the path to an MBBS seat.” He cried, “Make straight the way of the Lord.” Let me ask you plainly: if you eat, does this bring you to the Kingdom? If you secure admission, does this grant you righteousness? It is not meat and drink, nor is it test scores and academic placements. The kingdom of God is righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. These things no result can confer upon you, and no failure can take away. The hope of rewards hereafter, the perfectness of your religious state, this beauty of soul is ever blooming, ever in its prime. No disease withers it, no anxiety disfigures it, and certainly no examination result can touch it.

The rich man stands in need of many persons, often those unworthy of him, shamelessly asking for ten thousand things out of covetousness. But you, in your poverty of result and uncertainty, have need only of Christ. You have brought yourself low, and this is not a shameful thing but one to be admired, when you might have been puffed up with your own striving. Store up your treasure there, in that house where neither key nor bar is needed, where corruption cannot enter, where the worms of despondency do not consume. Transfer your hope to that inviolable place, and the assault of this present anxiety will find your armor uninjured.

Do not suppose I am dismissing your request. I am giving you the very peace you ask for, but you would receive it first in the mind, not in the outcome. When I say to you, “Peace be unto you,” do not answer “And with thy spirit” with the voice only, while out of doors your heart remains an enemy to trust. Make your life and conduct pure. If again you become an enemy to His timing, there is no preparation of peace in you. It is a worldly soul that cannot receive the Spirit, because it sees only what the world sees. Let us mind heavenly things, and the Comforter will direct all our affairs in much security.

Go then, and wait for whatever news comes, not as a prisoner awaiting a verdict, but as one already acquitted by the blood of Christ. Let the three thousand and the five thousand of the early Church be your witnesses: they were of one heart and one soul, having no other home beside that concord. Your sole home now is in that same unity with your Savior. He does not need your marks to accomplish His purpose. He needs your trust. Let the bonds of your anxiety be loosed, and a dewy breeze will pass through the furnace of your waiting.
