It will be a great mercy for you if you are so anxious to find God that you will not set any bounds as to where you shall find Him. Any holy exercise which will bring you to him will help you to bear fruit. Do you find prayer the channel of Jesus’ manifestations? See, then, our absolute dependence upon the Holy Spirit! The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. The Shepherd takes a peculiar interest in the lost, not only as now straying, but as having already gone very far away. At the close of the day 'twill be sweet to say, 'I have brought some lost one home.'

Your urgent cry for a lost paper reveals the feverish anxiety that grips the soul over earthly things. Consider what a small matter this is, a scrap of paper, a record of payment. Yet the agitation it stirs can choke the word and make it unfruitful. You ask Jesus to help you find it, but what are you really seeking? Merely the comfort of a settled account, a proof for a landlord. This is not the urgent necessity He commands us to feel.
You are called to serve in newness of spirit, not in the oldness of the letter. The oldness of the letter clings to such documents, receipts, and the ceaseless accounting of this world. It is a chain that holds you down, a fussing over the body and its temporal needs. But we were made to be dead to that wherein we were held. The chain of such anxieties was meant to be broken, so that sin, which uses these cares to strangle the soul, would have no more dominion over you. To be frantic over a rent statement is to live as if under the Law, tallying every debt, rather than under grace, which sets our eyes on the kingdom where no thief breaks in and no moth destroys.
Do you not see how the enemy uses these small distractions to lead you away to hell, just as surely as great sins? Covetousness and worldly anxiety will hear, “There is a void between us and you.” A lost paper is a mere pretext. The real loss is the mind’s peace and the heavenly treasure. What if you find it? You have secured a few more nights in a house of clay. But if in the search you lose your soul, what have you gained? Many are gathered in hell who were punctilious in their accounts but negligent in mercy and faith.
The only necessity and urgency that deserves our whole heart is the care of the soul. This is the profitable friendship we must show ourselves. Brother should aid brother to become a fortified city against these petty storms. True help is not in finding a worldly document, but in hindering the things which lead to destruction. Your panic itself is a sign that you have not yet put to death this old anxiety. Let the paper go if it must. That loss cannot compare to the fiery furnace. What need is there for such urgency over a rent statement? There is no urgent reason for your soul to go whither that anxious thought leads. The only true urgency is for repentance, for exceeding the righteousness of the scribes who merely counted their coins. Settle your heart's debt with God first, and then these earthly cares will seem as nothing, unable to prostrate the soul even in their apparent loss.
