Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer for strength to overcome fear is one that God hears and delights to answer. Fear is a common struggle, and it is often a tool the enemy uses to immobilize us and weaken our confidence. When fear takes hold, it can leave us feeling unable to move forward, which is why Scripture continually points us to a different source of strength.
The Lord Himself is presented as your light, your salvation, and the strength of your life. The psalmist asks, whom shall I fear and of whom shall I be afraid when the Lord is watching over me. He promises to be a shield and a strong tower, to hide you as in a shelter in the time of trouble, and to be with you wherever you go. The assurance that you walk through even the darkest valley with Him beside you is what takes away the terror. As it was said to Joshua, be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid, for the Lord your God is with you. The consciousness of His presence is the cure for anxiety.
Remembering the Lord is the remedy for fear. Fear and faith cannot rule the heart at the same time. Where fear is allowed to grow, faith is crowded out, but where faith and trust in God are strengthened, fear must leave. That is why you are wise to ask for His strength and not your own. If we look within ourselves for some hidden inner strength, we will eventually find it is not enough and we will fall. Our own wits and resolve will fail us in a hard moment. But when we trust in the Lord and lean on His strength, He does not let us down. He is the one who makes our hands strong and sustains us.
There is a fear that is good and right, the fear of the Lord. That is not a phobia or dread, but a deep awe of the Creator that causes us to hate evil and to walk in wisdom. It is the beginning of knowledge and it prolongs life in the way of righteousness. This is very different from the fear of people or circumstances or the future, which brings a snare. Scripture tells us not to fear the reproach of people, for they themselves are frail and passing, but to put our trust in the Lord and be safe.
You will find strength as you bring every fear to God in prayer and as you keep His Word in your heart. Prayer is a place of strength where uncertainty is turned to confidence, and His promises change an attitude of defeat into victory. As you cast your burdens on Him, He will sustain you.
May the Lord show you today that He is your light and your salvation, that He is with you and will be your strength. Ask Him to fill your heart with faith as you remember His presence and trust His Word, and to replace every fear with the peace that comes from knowing you are kept by Him. In Jesus name, may you greatly rejoice and praise Him as you find yourself helped and upheld by His saving strength.
