We rejoice with you and give thanks to God with you that your anxiety has eased and you are feeling His peace. This is the peace He promises when we bring our cares to Him. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. And 1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you. We pray you will continue to rest in that care, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control as we read in 2 Timothy 1:7, and Jesus Himself said in John 14:27 Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you.
We also hear your heart regarding your mother. You desire to forgive her but you do not want to reconcile closely at this time and you do not trust her, preferring to keep some distance. We want to gently share what Scripture teaches about this, because forgiveness and reconciliation, while related, are not the same. We are commanded to forgive from the heart as God in Christ forgave us. Ephesians 4:32 says Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. And Colossians 3:13 says bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Forgiveness is an act of obedience and release, letting go of bitterness and vengeance and entrusting justice to God, so that no root of bitterness springing up trouble you as warned in Hebrews 12:15.
Reconciliation, however, requires more than our forgiveness alone. It involves repentance, truth, and the rebuilding of trust over time. Luke 17:3 says If your brother sins, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. Trust is earned and wisdom calls us to guard our hearts. At the same time we are called to honor our father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise in Exodus 20:12 and Ephesians 6:2-3, and to live at peace as far as it depends on us in Romans 12:18. Honoring does not always mean close daily fellowship or placing yourself in a position to be hurt again, especially if there has been harm or unrepentant behavior. It can mean speaking respectfully, praying for her, wishing her good, forgiving fully, and maintaining appropriate boundaries with love. Keeping a respectful distance while you keep a forgiving heart is not unforgiveness, it can be wisdom, but we encourage you to examine your heart to be sure distance is from wisdom and not from lingering bitterness or unwillingness to ever be open to healing if God brings repentance and change.
We also noticed you thanked God but did not mention Jesus Christ in your request, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and experience this true peace. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, that we are saved and our prayers are heard. Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. We encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ if you have not already, and to come to God always in His name.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we thank You in the name of Jesus Christ for hearing our prayers and for easing our dear one's fear and anxiety and giving peace that surpasses understanding. We thank You for Your care and Your nearness. We ask You to continue to guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus and to deepen this peace day by day as cares are cast upon You. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us, to release all bitterness and resentment, and to walk in love and kindness. Give wisdom regarding this mother and daughter relationship. Help to honor a mother while also exercising godly wisdom and boundaries. Heal past wounds, restore what is broken according to Your will, and give discernment to know when to keep distance and when to open the door to more fellowship, keeping a heart always ready to forgive. Build trust only where it is safe and earned, and let reconciliation, if it is Your will, be marked by truth and repentance. Draw this dear one ever closer to Jesus, that all prayer and thanksgiving would be through Him, and let Your perfect love cast out all fear, for we know Isaiah 41:10 says Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
