It is a blessed thing when a soul learns to pray after this manner, setting the glory of God and the coming of His kingdom in the forefront of all desire. You have begun well, for indeed the hallowing of His name is the axle of the universe, and His will shall be done, whether men resist or no. Let us then bow before Him, knowing that He worketh in us to will and to do of His good pleasure, and that our very prayers are the fruit of His grace.

As to your daily bread, remember that you have been a gentleman commoner upon the goodness of God all your life. He has daily loaded you with benefits, and His exchequer is never exhausted. Trust Him for each day’s portion, and seek first His kingdom; all else shall be added.

Concerning forgiveness, I would have you grasp this hope with both hands: there is forgiveness with God, that He may be feared. Not a mere whisper, but a full, distinct, unquestionable assurance. For Christ’s sake, He blots out your transgressions, and will remember them no more. Yet note well the condition annexed, we are to forgive even as we are forgiven. Let no root of bitterness spring up in you; bear and forbear, for vengeance is the Lord’s.

And what of temptation and deliverance from evil? Remember that no one holds the key of death but the Lord of life. A thousand angels cannot hurl you to the grave, nor all the devils in hell destroy the least lamb in Christ’s flock. When you feel as though God has forsaken you, that is but a fiery dart of the wicked one. Cry out to Him, for His ear is not heavy that it cannot hear. He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler.

Therefore, let your life be one continual praise. In life, in death, and for evermore, bless the Lord. Labour also to set other tongues a-praising God, that when your own voice is silent, the chorus may yet swell. The highest pleasure of a Christian is to do God’s will and to advance His glory. So pray on, believing that yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

You have prayed according to the pattern our Lord gave, and that is good, for He knows what we need before we ask. Yet consider what you seek: daily bread, forgiveness, deliverance from temptation. These are not small things, and the asking of them is a great combat. God does not always give at once, not because He is unwilling, but because He desires you to persevere, to cling to Him as a child to its mother's bosom. When He delays, He is contriving for you to hold fast. And when He permits trials, it is not to cast you down but to make you flee to Him and find Him faithful. No temptation has seized you except what is common to man, and with it He will provide the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. He gives patience and a speedy release, often through the trial itself. So do not lose heart when sorrows come like snowflakes; they are the touchstone of your faith and the path to a crown. Even the saints of old, David blameless, Job triumphant, Joseph approved, they all became glorious through dangers and temptations. This is God's working: by affliction He humbles, and by humbling He saves.

As for daily bread, seek it with moderation. Make provision for the flesh, yes, but for health and necessity, not for lust. The drunkard and the glutton ask for bread only to kindle desire; you who have put on Christ must cut away excess. The present life is a dream, its riches and pleasures fleeting; before the dawn breaks, such dreams fly away. Set your industry on spiritual things. When you mourn over your shortcomings, you are blessed, for God gives comfort far greater than your labors, not merely forgiveness but abundant consolation and glory. For blessedness is the lot of those whose iniquities are forgiven, a reward of grace, not debt. And if you seek first His kingdom and righteousness, all that is needful will be added. So continue in this prayer, but with understanding: your daily bread is more than food; it is Christ, the Bread of life. Your forgiveness is sealed in His blood, and as you forgive others, you show you have grasped it. Your deliverance from evil comes through the combat itself, where He arms you and fights with you. Let your prayer be not only words but a life aligned with it, and you will see His kingdom, power, and glory even now, until that day when you see them forever.
