It is a high and blessed order in your prayer to set the glory of your Father and the coming of His kingdom before any cry for daily bread. Let this be the sacred geography of every petition, Seek first the kingdom. When the heart truly bows with “Hallowed be Your name,” it has already drawn near to the fountain of all needed good. The ransom has been found, not by human wit, but by infinite love. Deliverance from the pit was devised in the eternal council, and the command has gone forth from the excellent Glory: “Deliver him from going down to the pit.” This is the groundwork of every confidence.

You ask for daily bread. Consider this: He who gave His own dear Son to rescue you from everlasting destruction will not withhold bread and water. The loaf on your table preaches a thousand sermons, reminding you that you are so utterly needy that even your sustenance must be the gift of heavenly charity. Christ Himself is the soul-satisfying bread; those who feed upon Him find that their daily troubles lose their weight because their souls are full of joyful song. He delivered you from the power of darkness, a fascinating and tyrannical power, not by a hasty word or an easy work, but by the sole might of His grace. Will He not, then, help you in the smaller tribulations of the way? Certainly, He will.

Your petition climbs further: “Forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Take heed here with a trembling honesty. If you cannot pardon everyone, no matter how grievous the offense, you mock your own plea. If your heart holds a prisoner against another, you are yourself a stranger to the sweetness of pardoned sin. Confess and trust, and you are cleansed, but let that cleansing make your hands swift to unlock every chain of bitterness toward a brother. The brand plucked from the burning must not clutch a smoldering coal of malice.

The archers of the Evil One shoot in the darkness, and one poisoned arrow is more subtle than all the rest, the temptation to doubt the faithfulness of your God. Yet remember, all your ills lie within the fence of Omnipotent overruling. The Lord kindles the fiery furnace, but He sits as a Refiner at the door. The chastening is from a Father’s hand, making even the sharpest smart profitable. He has delivered you from the guilt of sin; He will deliver you from its power. Not one atom of the honor will belong to you, it is all of free grace. You shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.

Go your way, then, with this assurance. He is with you by His Spirit, making His Word mighty. Declare His works, recollecting your peaceful privileges, and die daily to a tempting world. For it is His kingdom, His power, and His glory forever. Amen.
