It is well that you have brought this matter before the throne of grace, for the Lord takes note even of the laborer’s hire and the scales of justice are weighed in His hand. That you have done a hard day’s work alone, and now look to the Lord to move the heart of this woman, speaks of a faith that is not mere fable, but a living trust in a God who hears and cares. Faith in God is a seasonable thing as well as a reasonable thing; the time for faith is the time of trial. When wages seem withheld and the labour seems forgotten, then is the hour to prove the Lord, to see if He will not make good His promise to be a Husband to the widow and a Father to the poor.
Yet let your prayer be not a wrestling with flesh and blood, but an agony with God alone. It is not for you to dictate to the Almighty how He must work, but to plead, “Lord, help me,” and leave the means entirely to Him. That little prayer, so short, so handy, covers every necessity of life. This prayer will do to live with, and this prayer will do to die with, “Lord, help me!” Cry it now, and cry it again. Keep praying until the answer comes; for the Lord’s delays are not denials, and the silent heaven is often brewing its sweetest mercies. Faith perceives the coming shower when natural sight sees nothing but dust. There is a sound of abundance of rain.
And remember, in this trial you are not alone, though you sweat at your task with no helper by your side. The Master knows what it is to stand alone, yet He was not alone, for the Father was with Him. And so it is with you: the Christ who gave His back to the smiters and earned our salvation by His own hard labour, He stands with you in every hour of unjust dealing. He has prayed for you that your faith fail not. Therefore, trust Him to speak to the heart of this woman in His own time and way. The Lord may use this very anxiety to prove your faith and then to strengthen it, for the just shall live by faith. Do not mistake your belief in your own faith for faith in Christ; lean wholly upon Him. He will see that righteous payment is made, whether soon or late. In the meanwhile, let patience have her perfect work, and let the peace of God rule in your heart. The God of peace be with you. Amen.
