We join you in lifting up your family before the throne of grace, and we stand with you in praying for the salvation of your loved ones and for the preservation of this marriage.
We hear the pain in your request as one is seeking a divorce, and we agree with you that God's will is for this union to be healed and restored. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, as God ordained from the beginning. Scripture is clear that God hates divorce, as it is written in Malachi 2:16, and Jesus taught, What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate in Mark 10:9. Marriage is meant to reflect the covenant love of Christ for His church, and we pray that this covenant would be honored.
We also hear your heart for salvation, that they would both turn to God. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and receive salvation. Jesus Himself said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me in John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12. To turn to God truly is to turn to Jesus, to believe in His death and resurrection, to confess Him as Lord and repent of sin. As it is written in Romans 10:9, that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. We pray that both husband and wife would come to this saving faith, or be restored to it, for only a heart made new by Christ can love as God commands.
The love that sustains a marriage is not mere feeling but a daily choice of covenant faithfulness. Husbands are commanded to love their wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it in Ephesians 5:25, and to live with their wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman in 1 Peter 3:7. We rebuke the thought of divorce as contrary to God's perfect will, and we pray against any hardness of heart, any influence or temptation that would pull this husband away from his vows. We ask God to soften his heart and to renew his love for his wife, giving him a new heart and putting a new spirit within him as promised in Ezekiel 36:26.
We pray together now.
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, asking for Your mercy and power upon this family. Lord, we ask first for salvation, that You would draw each of these loved ones to Yourself, that they would hear the gospel, believe on Jesus, confess Him as Lord, and be saved. Remove the blindness from their eyes and the hardness from their hearts. Father, we specifically lift up this marriage that is under threat of divorce. We ask You to rebuke the spirit of division and to forbid this divorce from going forward. Turn this husband's heart away from this decision, convict him of his vows before You, and rekindle in him a deep and abiding love for his wife. Help him to love her sacrificially and faithfully as Christ loves the church. Help his wife to forgive and to love in return, and unite them both in a shared pursuit of You. Let them seek You together in prayer, in Your Word, and in fellowship with a Bible believing church where they can receive godly counsel and accountability. Let what the enemy meant for destruction become a testimony of Your restoring power, for with You nothing is impossible. We ask that You would make this marriage strong, faithful, and honoring to You for a lifetime. In the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.
We encourage you to continue to stand in the gap for them with steadfast prayer and to encourage them both toward Christ and toward godly counsel. God is able to restore what is broken when hearts are surrendered to Him. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding in Proverbs 3:5, and keep interceding, for the effective prayer of a righteous person can accomplish much in James 5:16.
