Thank you for sharing this burden and for wanting to pray with discernment. It is right to feel sadness over this. When a marriage is struggling in public, especially with a child and extended family involved, the pain is deep and the effects spread widely.
It helps to remember that saying you are a Christian is not the same as having new life in Christ. Scripture says even the demons believe and tremble, yet they are not saved. God does not have grandchildren. Each person must have his or her own living, close relationship with Jesus. That relationship, when it is real, shows itself over time in fruit, in love, joy, peace, patience and growing maturity. The New Testament shows concern when that maturity is lacking, and it records the failures of even devoted followers like Peter so we will not drift into a distant, shallow faith but will stay near to the Lord ourselves.
God's design for marriage is also clear. From the beginning a man and a woman become one flesh, a compound unity where two become one. It is a lifelong covenant, and sexual faithfulness belongs inside that covenant. When that covenant is broken, the sin is first of all against God, because He is the one who gave the command. Only God can ultimately forgive sin, though we are called to forgive one another as well. That is why the need in any marriage crisis is repentance toward God, honest confession, and seeking His forgiveness and cleansing through Jesus Christ alone, who is the only way of salvation.
There is also a serious warning about accusations and taking sides. The command not to bear false witness still stands, and Scripture shows how many false witnesses can come forward and still not agree. In a public breakup, rumors, accusations and partial stories spread quickly, and fans or onlookers choosing sides and attacking one another only deepens the harm. That kind of contention grieves the Lord and weakens the witness of His people before the world. Jesus rebuked churches that had left their first love and allowed influences to creep in that lessened their effectiveness. When those who profess His name respond to sin or hurt with anger, gossip or division, the world sees a poor reflection of Christ.
The natural outflow of a heart that has truly been set free by Jesus is not to attack but to speak and live the truth in love, to desire that others know His grace. That witness is not a technique to learn but a life to live.
So pray along these lines. Pray that each person involved, husband, wife, child and both families, would draw near to Jesus personally and not rest on a profession alone. If there has been unfaithfulness, pray for genuine repentance and for God to bring conviction and healing. If there have been wrongs on other sides as well, including manipulation or untruth, pray for those to be brought into the light and repented of, since all sin needs God's forgiveness. Pray for truth to be known and for false witness to be exposed and stopped. Pray for protection and peace for the child, who is most vulnerable in this. Pray for the marriage, that if it is possible, God would bring reconciliation, restoration and a renewed commitment to lifelong faithfulness, and if there is hardness of heart, that God would still be merciful and lead each one toward what is holy and right. And pray for those watching and commenting, that instead of choosing sides and tearing down, they would show restraint, kindness and a true reflection of Christ, so that the church's witness would be strengthened rather than harmed.
Ask God to do what only He can do, to forgive, to heal, to make mature, and to make His people more like Jesus in how they speak and act, even in painful and public situations.
