Family

Your prayer for unity and love in your family is beautiful and it reflects the heart of God. He desires that families be bound together in Christ, and your longing for humility, patience, kindness and forgiveness is exactly what His Word calls us to.

Scripture teaches that God is love in His very essence, and that love from Him is not the shallow sentiment often portrayed in our culture, nor is it merely natural family affection or physical attraction. The love He pours into His children by His Spirit is agape, a giving, self sacrificing love that seeks the good of the other. It is the same love Christ showed when He gave Himself for us as an offering to God. When that love lives in us, God dwells in us and His love is made complete in us. One of the clearest signs that His Spirit is at work in our lives is that we begin to love one another with that kind of love.

That is why forgiveness in the family is to be measured by how God has forgiven us. We are called to love as Christ loved us and to forgive as Christ forgave us. That is a high calling, because His forgiveness toward us is complete and undeserved. Yet as we remember how much we have been loved and forgiven through Jesus alone, our hearts are softened to extend that same grace to one another. We love because He first loved us, and when we truly grasp His love for us, it creates a response of love back to Him and outward to those closest to us.

Unity in the home grows as we walk in that love day by day. It means not living to please ourselves, but considering one another with humility and longsuffering. It means bearing with one another in patience and showing kindness even when it is difficult. God Himself is the God of patience and comfort, and He is able to give you that patience and consolation as you look to His Word and rely on His Spirit. As each member seeks to reflect Christ rather than insist on their own way, true unity is formed.

I pray that the Lord will strengthen your faith and draw each of you closer to Himself. May He fill your home with His presence, help you to abide in His love, and empower you to walk in that love toward one another. May He teach you to forgive freely as you have been forgiven, to be humble and gentle in all your interactions, and to let His patience and kindness be seen in your words and actions.

Father, I lift this family to You in the name of Jesus. Pour out Your love upon them and bind them together in the unity that comes from Your Spirit. Help them to forgive as You have forgiven them and to love as Christ has loved them. Clothe them with humility, patience and kindness, and let their home reflect Your love to one another and to the world. Deepen their faith and draw them ever closer to You, that they may walk together in Your grace. Amen.
