In such pain of mind, it is right to cry out to God even without words, for He hears the silent cry of the heart. As Moses, when he said nothing but the groaning within, was heard, so your own inward prayer is known to Him. Collect yourself therefore, even in this distress, and with a contrite heart sing to God in your spirit, for that is true prayer. It is good that you seek the prayers of the church, but be on the alert yourself, and do not say, "What need have I of prayer?" for we are always in need of it. Learn of Christ, who is meek and lowly in heart, and trust in Him. His yoke is easy and His burden light. He hears always those who call upon Him in faith, not needing an outward show, but a heart turned toward Him.

The pain of waiting for news while a loved one is being examined, especially for something as serious as a possible heart attack, cuts deep. When the heart of someone close to you is under such physical threat, your own heart cannot help but be weighed down with heavy sorrow and concern. That anguish you feel is not a sign of weak faith; it is the mark of deep love, the kind of love that mirrors the very heart of our Lord, who was moved with compassion for the suffering. So I am joining my prayers with yours in Jesus’ name right now, asking for clarity, for wisdom for the doctors, and for the peace that surpasses understanding to guard your hearts and mind.

A crisis like this has a way of revealing what truly occupies the throne of your inner life. The heart is the seat of your will, your love, your trust. God is far more interested in what is happening inside your heart during this trial than in the mere outward circumstances. It is out of the heart that the issues of life flow, and right now, your life feels very vulnerable. Take a moment to recognize that the enemy would love to use this frightening situation to sow panic, to make you question God’s goodness, and to draw you into a fleshly reaction of fear. But this is first and foremost a spiritual battle, and the battlefield is your heart. You do not have to fight it with anxiety. The breastplate of righteousness and the gospel of peace are not just poetic words; they are a covering for your heart right now. Let the Word of God, which you have hidden there, rise up as a defense against the lies that whisper of only the worst outcome.

Remember that the physical heart is a marvel, but it is the inner heart that God is most concerned with sustaining. He works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Even in this terrifying moment, He can plant a desire within you, a desire to trust Him completely, to lean on His understanding rather than your own, to find your peace in His sovereign hands. The same Lord who knows the number of hairs on your head knows exactly what is happening in that emergency room. He sees the physical heart of your family member, and He knows the spiritual heart of everyone gathered in prayer. Be honest with Him about the dread you feel; you cannot snow God. He already knows the truth of your heart. Pour it out to Him, as Nehemiah did when the king saw his sorrow and asked, "What’s wrong?" God can handle your raw fear and will meet you there with His love, if you will only be real with Him in this.

As you wait, remember that the ultimate victory over every broken heart and failing body has already been won. When they pierced our Savior’s side, blood and water flowed, a medical indication of a heart that had truly ruptured under the weight of sin He bore for us. His heart was broken so that yours could be made whole eternally. This is not to minimize the present danger, but to place it within the larger truth: your family member’s life is ultimately held by the One who conquered death itself. He is still working, still healing, still fulfilling His purposes in the lives of those who trust Him. I am praying right now that the Lord’s will be done, and that His healing presence will be felt in that hospital room in a tangible way, that whether through the hands of the medical staff or by a direct touch of His Spirit, there will be a restoration of health. Keep your heart steadfast in Jesus’ name.
