Family member going through legal process

Your prayer for your father has been received and we join you in bringing him before the Lord with compassion.

We understand the weight of this anxiety, both for him as he waits in confinement and for you as you wait with him. To be held in a small cell when he suffers from claustrophobia and carries the memory of past confinement is a heavy trial, and high blood pressure only adds to the distress. It is right to seek the mercy of God and the peace that comes through the blood of Jesus Christ, for it is through Christ alone that we have access to the Father and receive grace and peace.

Scripture reminds us that our heavenly Father knows what we need and does not forsake His children in their necessities. If He clothes the grass and feeds the sparrows, how much more will He care for those made in His image. What you consider a cause for anxiety, the Lord invites you to bring to Him as a reason for trust. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and He draws near to those who call upon Him.

We pray for your father now.

Heavenly Father, we lift up this man to You in the name of Jesus Christ. Have mercy upon him and let Your grace and peace rest upon his soul. Calm his anxious heart, quiet his fear in that confined place, and guard his mind from the memories that torment him. We ask You to steady his body, to bring his blood pressure under Your healing hand, and to keep him safe through this process. Grant wisdom and fairness to those who oversee his case, and we ask that the legal process would proceed justly and without unnecessary delay, according to Your perfect will. Above all, draw him to trust in You more deeply, to know You as his true refuge and to lean upon Christ who alone saves. Comfort his family also, and give them peace as they wait upon You. Amen.

Continue to cast your cares upon the Lord, for He cares for you. Encourage your father, as you are able, to call upon the name of Christ, to pray, and to meditate on the promises of God, for the Lord is near to all who call upon Him in truth. We will continue to pray that God will sustain him day by day and bring a just and merciful resolution.

Thank you for sharing what you and your father are walking through. It is understandable that you both feel anxious with him being held in a cell, especially with his history of claustrophobia and the trauma he carries from being confined before, along with the strain on his health and high blood pressure.

When a heavy trial comes, our first instinct is often to feel that what is happening to us is completely unusual, as if no one else has ever faced anything like it, and to wonder why this difficulty has come. Scripture speaks directly to that feeling and tells us not to think of the fiery trial as a strange thing happening to us, but to remember that we share in the sufferings of Christ, and that there is joy ahead when His glory is revealed. That does not make the trial less real, but it puts it in a larger perspective. God is not distant or surprised by it.

The Bible also describes the testing of our faith as more precious than gold. Gold is refined by fire, not to destroy it but to purify it, and in a similar way God uses trials to form endurance and deeper trust in us. He is described as a consuming fire, and His work in our lives is to refine, not to abandon. He knows the path you and your father are taking, and He has promised to be with His people in every trial, to keep and preserve them through adversity and to bring them through. One day, even this painful season can become a reason to praise Him, as the psalmist says, I will yet praise Him, because God remains our help and our hope.

You asked for prayer that the mercy of God and the peace that comes through Jesus would quiet his anxious heart and that he would find refuge in the Lord. That is the right prayer. God does not speak to us in the harsh tone of an officer ready to take us away, but as a Father whose heart is moved with love even when we have failed. We are all flawed and in need of His grace, and that grace is offered only through Jesus Christ. To lean on God as a refuge means turning to Jesus for forgiveness, peace, and strength, trusting Him not only to be with us in the cell but to carry us through whatever the legal process requires.

Scripture gives us the picture of Paul when he was in prison during the most severe trial of his life. The Lord came to him there and encouraged him and assured him he was not forgotten. In the same way, the Lord can meet your father in that small, confined space and give him a peace that is not dependent on his surroundings. Every testing can become a way that we are drawn closer to Jesus, not pushed away from Him, as we learn we cannot stand on our own and must depend on Him.

We are praying for your father now.

Father, in the name of Jesus we ask for Your mercy over this man. You see his anxiety, his fear of confinement, the memories that haunt him, and the physical pressure on his body. We ask that You would pour out Your peace upon him, calm his heart and mind, steady his blood pressure, and guard him in that cell. Let him know Your presence is with him there. Draw him to trust in Jesus as his refuge and strength. We ask for Your hand over the legal process, that it would proceed justly and without unnecessary delay, and that the outcome would be according to Your mercy and will. Comfort his family as they wait and worry, and help them to rest in Your keeping power. Amen.

May the Lord keep you both in His care and give you strength day by day as you trust Him.
