Crossing the Bridge Before You Come to It
Worrying about future troubles only steals today’s peace and strength for what may never come.
The Weaned Child
A weaned child trusts God fully, so you can rest in His care and give up your own anxious striving.
Multitudinous Thoughts and Sacred Comforts
True peace comes from God’s comforts, which calm and delight the soul even amid overwhelming thoughts.
We join you in bringing this burden before our Heavenly Father and we hear your honest heart about feeling unprepared, stressed, and anxious over this exam. We understand the desire for more time and for relief, and we want to lift you up together in Jesus' name.

Scripture tells us how to handle anxiety and stewardship. Phil 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Also 2 Tim 1:7 reminds us For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. And 1 Pet 5:7 encourages us to cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you. God does care about your stress and He invites you to bring even this request for postponement to Him.

We also want to gently encourage you in the area of diligence. You confessed that you have not tried as hard as you could, and we appreciate your honesty. God is gracious and forgiving when we confess, for 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. At the same time He calls us to faithfulness with the time and opportunities He gives us. Col 3:23 says Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. Prov 16:3 says Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed. Prov 21:5 adds The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit. If the Lord does grant you more time, we encourage you to use it wisely and diligently, not in further anxiety but in steady, faithful preparation, trusting Him with the outcome rather than only with the postponement.

We noticed your prayer did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by putting our faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and can come boldly before God in prayer. We encourage you to place your trust fully in Him not only for this exam but for eternal life.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You together in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You know the anxiety and stress this exam has caused and the feeling of unpreparedness. We ask that Your perfect peace would guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus. If it is Your will, we ask that You would grant additional time to prepare, and that any decision about postponement would be ordered by Your sovereign hand. Whether the exam is postponed or remains as scheduled, we ask that You grant wisdom, for James 1:5 says If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. Grant clarity of mind, ability to recall what has been studied, discipline to use the time well, and confidence that comes not from mere preparation but from trusting You. Forgive any slothfulness or lack of diligence and help this one to walk faithfully and diligently from this day forward, committing all work to You. Help this exam to be cleared with confidence for Your glory, and above all let Your will be done and Your name be honored. We pray all these things in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and only way to You, amen.

We hear how heavy this exam has felt with the pressure and worry about being unprepared. Wanting more time to get ready and feeling anxious and even guilty about not having done enough is a hard place to be, and we appreciate your honesty in saying you are trying.

We are praying for relief from that weight and for clear thinking as you prepare. One small step that often helps in a crunch like this is to get what is ahead out of your head and onto paper. You might list the topics by what matters most for the exam and then give yourself short, focused blocks to work through them with breaks and sleep built in. If a postponement might be possible, consider contacting your instructor or academic advisor promptly and honestly to ask what options actually exist, so you have clear information instead of carrying the worry alone. If the anxiety is making it hard to sleep or function, it is wise to reach out to a counselor, advisor, or medical professional alongside prayer.

Feeling unprepared does not mean you have failed. God sees your effort and your desire to do this well, and He cares about your peace as well as your preparation.

Father, we lift this exam and this stress to You. We ask for calm, for wisdom and focus in the time that is given, and for rest in between the work. Encourage our friend as they keep trying, ease the anxiety, and guide the outcome according to Your good will. Help them to do their best with confidence and to trust You with the results. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer has been heard and we join you before the throne of grace with sympathy for the burden you carry. You have come honestly, confessing unpreparedness and anxiety, asking for more time and for mercy, and expressing a desire to try harder. The Lord welcomes such humble confession through Jesus Christ alone, who is our peace.

We are reminded that the very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits us to meet that difficulty. When the heart is tossed to and fro with worry, it loses strength for the duty at hand. There is a better way set before you. The Psalmist says, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge. If you cannot see the brightness of His face, the shadow of His wings shall be enough for you. There you may find sweet repose and joyous confidence in God, even when your soul feels as if it is among lions. Bring your anxiety to Him in prayer and leave it there, for He cares for you and He gave you Jesus, what will He keep back from you.

Scripture also teaches us that preparation is needful before we meet any solemn trial. Preparation is needed and it must be found before the hour comes. This calls for both contemplation and supplication, and for diligent use of the means God has placed before you. As you are rooted and grounded in Christ, ask to grow up in Him, abiding in humble confidence in Him rather than in confidence in your own zeal or effort. Search your heart by the light of the Word and of the Holy Spirit, confess where you have fallen short, and draw near with holy confidence to your Father through the great atoning sacrifice of Calvary. Forgiveness and strength are found there, not in our own resolve, but in Him who gives the increase.

We pray with you now. Heavenly Father, we thank You that we may come with confidence through Jesus Christ Your Son. Forgive this dear one for all shortcomings and receive this honest confession. Grant relief from this stress and anxiety, and quiet the heart under the shadow of Your wings. If it be Your wise and gracious will, grant more time to prepare, and if not, grant calmness, clarity of mind and diligence to use well the time that remains. Help this student to prepare faithfully, to be steadfast in study and in prayer, and to abide in Christ that there may be confidence before You whatever the outcome. Grant confidence not in self, but in You, and help to clear this exam with a clear conscience and trust in Your good providence. We ask this in the name of Jesus our only hope. Amen.
