Your honest confession has been heard, and I thank you for bringing it before the Lord and before His people in such plainness. The ache you feel is real, and it is not hidden from Him who heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds.
It is no small thing to miss one whom you have loved, and that very tenderness of heart which makes the missing so keen is itself known to God. Yet that longing, though it is felt so strongly, is not of itself a guide for the path you should take. The heart often craves what would be its poison, and therefore we must bring our affections to be tried by the Word of God.
You have spoken truly that he is not a Christian, and there your own conscience has given you light. The Scripture says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. That yoke was given not to grieve you but to guard you. To cast it off may seem for a moment to be liberty, but as one has said, he who breaks the yoke of wood soon finds he must wear a yoke of iron. The sorrow of an unequally yoked life is far heavier and longer than the sorrow of a present parting, and that first loss, though it be painful now, will be vastly less than the after losses you would incur by seeking to avoid it.
Do not think that this pain must be borne alone or in your own strength. There is abundant healing power in Jesus Christ, and not only His fruit but even the leaves of that blessed Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations. The least thing about Christ is healing. His blood pardons and His grace heals, and He can change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. Look to Him now, not to the return of an old affection, for your comfort. Seek after Christ first, and peace will come next. Peace comes by believing, and when the soul trusts Him and loves Him, there it finds Him.
You do well to pray, Lead us not into temptation. That prayer is not only to be spoken but to be lived. He who prays it and then goes wilfully into the place of temptation contradicts his own prayer. If the sight or the message or the memory stirs the old longing, turn then to prayer, to the Word, to the company of faithful friends, and ask the Lord to keep you from falling. He will not suffer you to be tried above what you are able to bear, and with the trial He will make a way of escape.
Let us pray for you now.
O Father, merciful and faithful, hear this Thy child who sorrows. Thou knowest the tender longing and the loneliness of this hour. Forgive all sin and wash the heart in the precious blood of Thy Son. Spread Thy healing leaves over this wounded spirit and give health and cure. Grant a deeper trust in Christ, that believing Thou mayest fill the heart with joy and peace. Keep this dear one from temptation, guard the feet from turning aside, and give strength to walk in obedience even when the heart is heavy. We ask not that Thou wouldst bless what Thou hast called us to forsake, but that Thou wouldst bless obedience with contentment and with nearness to Thyself. And we pray for the one who is yet without Christ, that if it be Thy will Thou wouldst have mercy upon him and bring him to salvation through Jesus alone, not for our comfort but for Thy glory. Make both to know that salvation is in Christ alone, and that Thou art the God of all comfort. In the name of Jesus our Healer and our Peace, Amen.
Be much in prayer and in the Word, and lean upon the Lord day by day. He who has begun a good work will perfect it, and He will not leave you comfortless.
