We thank you for sharing this honestly with us and we rejoice with you that you have left the new age behind and returned to Christ, for that is the only place where true forgiveness and freedom are found. We also affirm your obedience in ending that courtship, because what you did was right and biblical. The Scripture says, Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14. Courtship is to be entered with the goal of marriage between a man and a woman who both belong to Jesus, looking for a godly spouse, not simply a partner or boyfriend, and when that foundation of shared faith is not there, separation is obedience even when it is painful.
We want to speak clearly about the divination thoughts that have plagued you. The new age practice of divination, seeking hidden knowledge about the future or about other people apart from God, is forbidden by God. There shall not be found with you anyone who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer. For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh. Deuteronomy 18:10. Even when you have repented and left those things, the enemy can still harass your mind with intrusive thoughts that feel like divination, whispering what your ex is doing or feeling or whether he will return. We rebuke that deception and we rebuke any lingering agreement with divination in Jesus’ name. Those thoughts are not the voice of the Holy Spirit, even when they seem accurate at times. The enemy can use coincidence, observation, and knowledge of your wounds to keep you in bondage, and accuracy does not mean it is from God. We are told to test the spirits and to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12.
We encourage you that the steps you are taking toward true forgiveness and obedience to Christ are exactly what God desires, and He will honor that. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. We encourage you to make a full and clear renunciation before the Lord of every new age practice, every divination tool, book, object, or meditation you once used, and to remove and destroy anything that remains, just as the early believers burned their books when they came to Christ. Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7. Do not entertain or follow these intrusive thoughts when they come, even the ones that give you hope that he will come back. To give them attention is to open a door again. Instead, when they come, we encourage you to immediately turn to prayer, to speak Scripture aloud, and to fill your mind with what God says is true. Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2. This renewal comes daily through the Word, through worship, and through fellowship with other believers who can pray with you and keep you accountable.
We also hear your heart for your ex. It is right that you recognize you cannot be together unless he is a Christian, and we commend you for not compromising that truth for the sake of longing. It would be wrong to continue a romantic or sexual relationship outside of marriage and outside of shared faith, for sex outside of marriage is fornication and God calls His children to purity. We pray that any fornication in the past would be fully confessed and forsaken, and that you would walk in the freedom of forgiveness. We also understand the pain of intrusive thoughts that torment you with images of him moving on or coming back, and how the hope that he misses you creates chaos. We encourage you to release him fully into God’s hands. God can save him, but that salvation must be for God’s glory and for his own soul, not so that you can have the relationship you desire. You did what you could to share the truth, and now we trust the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in His timing. We must not hold onto a hope that keeps us yoked in our hearts to someone God has called us to let go of.
We join together now to pray for you in Jesus’ name, for it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift this dear sister to You and thank You for drawing her out of darkness and back into Your light. We ask for Your complete cleansing and deliverance from every residue of the new age and every spirit of divination. We renounce divination and sorcery on her behalf and ask You to break its power over her mind. We ask You to silence these loud, intrusive thoughts and to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Heal her mind and renew it daily with Your Word and Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Give her grace to walk in true forgiveness, to obey You in all ways, and to resist the devil so that he will flee. We pray for her ex, that You would open his eyes to the error of his beliefs, that You would convict him of sin and reveal Jesus as the only way, the truth and the life. We pray for his loved ones also, that faith would take root in their hearts and that they would come to know You. Help our sister to surrender all hope for that relationship to Your will, to trust that if he does come to Christ it will be Your doing and in Your timing, and to find her hope and identity in You alone. Guard her heart from fornication and from any unequal yoking, and lead her in time to a godly marriage with a believing husband if it is Your will. Fill her with Your Holy Spirit, with assurance of forgiveness, and with quietness of mind. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen.
