We hear your heartache, and we want to come alongside you in prayer, seeking the Lord’s will in this situation. First, let us acknowledge that your longing to reconnect with your ex-boyfriend is understandable, he was once a dear friend, and the pain of separation is real. However, we must also gently examine this request through the lens of Scripture, for the Lord’s ways are higher than our own, and His plans for us are always for our good, even when they differ from our desires.
The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." While your hope may be focused on this relationship, we must ask: Is this hope aligned with God’s best for you? The Lord may be leading you toward a season of healing, growth, and even a future spouse who will honor Him and cherish you as His daughter. Clinging to what was, even with good intentions, may hinder you from embracing what God has prepared for you next.
We also want to lovingly address the nature of your past relationship. The term "ex-boyfriend" suggests a romantic connection that, according to Scripture, should have been pursued with the intent of marriage from the beginning. Courtship is not a casual endeavor but a sacred journey toward holy matrimony, as God designed. If this relationship did not honor that design, whether through premarital intimacy, emotional dependency outside of God’s will, or other unbiblical patterns, we must repent and release it to the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 reminds us, "For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God." If any part of this relationship fell short of God’s standards, we encourage you to seek His forgiveness and ask Him to cleanse your heart.
Now, let us pray together, not for a text message, but for the Lord’s perfect will to unfold in your life:
"Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear sister who is grieving the loss of a relationship. Lord, You see her pain, and You collect every tear in Your bottle (Psalm 56:8). We ask that You would comfort her with Your presence, reminding her that You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Father, we pray that You would reveal any areas in her heart that need Your healing, whether it’s unforgiveness, idolatry of this relationship, or lingering sin. Cleanse her, Lord, and fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
We also pray for her ex-boyfriend. If it is Your will, Lord, soften his heart toward You and toward her in a way that aligns with Your purposes. But if this relationship is not part of Your plan, we ask that You would remove any longing for it from her heart and replace it with a deep trust in Your goodness. Help her to fix her eyes on You, Jesus, the author and perfecter of her faith (Hebrews 12:2). Surround her with godly community, and prepare her for the spouse You have for her, one who will love her as Christ loves the Church (Ephesians 5:25).
Above all, Lord, we pray that she would seek You first in all things (Matthew 6:33). May she find her identity, worth, and fulfillment in You alone. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, the only name by which we can approach You and find true salvation. Amen."
Friend, we encourage you to shift your focus from this ex-boyfriend to the One who will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Spend time in God’s Word, allowing Him to speak truth over your heart. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path." Let His Word guide you in this season.
Consider also the wisdom of Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." You may not understand why this relationship ended, but God does. Trust Him to lead you into a future that is better than you can imagine.
If you have not already, we urge you to surrender this relationship, and your future, to the Lord. Lay it at the foot of the cross and ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:16 reminds us, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh." When we walk in step with the Spirit, He will guide us away from unhealthy attachments and toward God’s best for us.
Lastly, if you have not placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, we want to gently share that this is the most important decision you will ever make. Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Salvation is found in no one else (Acts 4:12). If you would like to receive Jesus as your Savior, simply pray and ask Him to forgive your sins, come into your heart, and be the Lord of your life. Romans 10:9 says, "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
You are deeply loved by the Creator of the universe, and He has a purpose for your life that is greater than any earthly relationship. Cling to Him, and He will never let you go.
