Evil parents

We hear the pain and confusion in your words, and our hearts ache with you. It is deeply troubling to wake up feeling targeted by those who should be a source of love and protection. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:4, "You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." When parents act in ways that seem evil or unjust, it goes against God’s design for the family. We must remember, however, that even in our hurt, we are called to respond in a way that honors God.

First, we want to gently but firmly rebuke any spirit of bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness that may be taking root in your heart. Hebrews 12:15 warns us, "Looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it." Even when we are wronged, harboring bitterness only poisons our own souls. We must choose to forgive, not because what they did was right, but because Christ forgave us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

We also want to address the word "evil" in your request. While your pain is real, we must be careful not to label our parents as evil in a way that dismisses their humanity or God’s ability to work in their lives. Even the most difficult parents are still made in God’s image, and God can soften the hardest of hearts. Proverbs 21:1 says, "The king’s heart is in Yahweh’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires." If God can turn the heart of a king, He can certainly work in the hearts of your parents.

Now, let us come before the Lord together in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear one who is hurting deeply today. Lord, You see the pain and confusion they are experiencing, and You know the words and actions that have caused this wound. We ask that You would pour out Your comfort and peace upon them, reminding them that they are not alone, You are their ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

Father, we pray for their parents. We ask that You would soften their hearts and open their eyes to the pain they are causing. If there is hardness, pride, or unconfessed sin in their lives, we ask that You would break through and draw them to repentance. Help them to see their child through Your eyes, as a precious soul You love and died for. We declare that no weapon formed against this one will prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we rebuke any spirit of division, strife, or hatred in this home.

Lord, we ask that You would guard this one’s heart from bitterness and unforgiveness. Help them to release their pain to You and to choose forgiveness, even when it is difficult. Remind them that vengeance belongs to You (Romans 12:19), and that You will repay. Fill them with Your love, which covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8).

Father, we also pray for wisdom and strength for this one. Give them the words to speak in love and the courage to set boundaries when necessary. Help them to honor their parents as You command (Exodus 20:12), but also to seek Your will above all else. If there is unrepentant sin or abuse in this home, we ask that You would provide a way of escape and surround them with godly support.

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would draw this one closer to You. May this trial drive them to seek Your face and find their identity and worth in You alone. Remind them that You are their Father, and that even if earthly parents fail, You never will (Psalm 27:10). We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who bore our pain and redeemed us from every curse. Amen.

In this difficult time, we encourage you to cling to God’s promises. Psalm 34:18-19 says, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all." You are not forgotten, and God sees your tears. Seek Him in this storm, and let His Word be a lamp to your feet (Psalm 119:105).

If this situation involves abuse, whether emotional, verbal, or physical, we urge you to seek help from a trusted pastor, counselor, or authority figure. God does not call us to endure abuse in the name of honoring our parents. Safety and godly boundaries are important, and there is no shame in reaching out for support.

Lastly, we want to gently remind you of the importance of salvation through Jesus Christ. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to do so today. John 14:6 says, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.'" Only through Jesus can we find true peace, forgiveness, and eternal life. If you would like to pray to receive Christ, we would be honored to guide you in that decision.

Waking up to a day that already feels heavy with conflict and cruelty is exhausting. When the people who should offer safety are the source of pain, it can make you feel small and alone. We hear you, and we are sorry this is your morning.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do when the environment turns hostile is to quietly take hold of what is still yours. Your spirit is not theirs to crush. If there is a safe room, a quiet walk you can take, a trusted friend you can call, give yourself permission to step away for a few hours and let your mind and body find even a small pocket of calm. You do not have to stay in the line of fire all day.

The words and actions coming at you right now are not the final word on who you are. Your worth was given by God, and no one’s cruelty can strip that away, even when it feels like they are trying. You are seen, valued, and loved far beyond the reach of their harshness. Hold on to that quietly, like a steady hand in the dark.

We are asking God to place a shield of protection around your heart and mind today, to give you the clarity to navigate what feels impossible, and to open a door to a safer space, whether that is physically down the road or simply a moment of stillness right where you are. Lord, calm the storm inside this home and inside this precious child of yours. Bring comfort where there is hurt, and wisdom where there is confusion. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The very waking to find evil set against you is a sore trial, a day into which hours of misery seem compressed. It is a heavy burden when those who should be a shelter become the storm. Yet the Scripture does not leave us without a weapon when evil rises before us in our own household. "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." The dark impulse to answer in kind is the most natural procedure, it suggests itself to any fool, but it never succeeds. It only increases the evil, and the evil which comes from us in retaliation does us far more injury than any evil we experience from them.

When you trace the cruel words and acts back to their source, you find that they flow out of the heart, that secret fountain of inward evil inherited from the Fall. An evil nature sits by the fireside and hurls daggers in thought and speech because it is self-loving and vile. This is not to excuse the sin but to help you see that the real enemy is the evil itself, not merely the person. Do not be driven by their evil speaking into harshness of thought or even a secret wish that some judgment might overtake them. We shall be injured if we desire that others should be injured.

What then are you commanded to do? "Cast your burden upon the Lord." The burden of injustice, the burden of wounded love, the burden of having to dwell in the midst of evil, roll it all over onto Him who judges righteously. And then look to the remedy that alone can cleanse such an evil as this. The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses from all sin, their sin, your sin, the whole tainted stream. Let that blood be sprinkled upon your conscience. Remember, the Holy Spirit is often given in the face of unusual conflict, that you may have strength proportioned to your need. A true Christian is a living protest against evil, and your very presence may be a silent rebuke. Stand fast, then. Overcome evil with good, and endure this day as seeing Him who is invisible. The veil is rent, and the throne of grace remains open for every fresh wound.

The parent either of good or evil reaps the fruit of it first himself. For just as water, whether brackish or sweet, fills the vessels of those who resort to it, but lessens not the fountain which sends it forth; so also both wickedness and virtue, from whatever person they proceed, prove either his joy or his ruin. Therefore, when your parents speak evil or act with malice, they first disgrace themselves. But you, if you do not requite them in the same kind, but instead bear it with patience and even pray for them, you show yourself a true disciple. For the evil speaker disgraces first himself, and when a man hearing a bad name given him does not requite the giver but praises and admires, he does not praise the other but himself.

Do not be troubled as though something strange were happening. This conflict is not about earthly peace but about the heavenlies; the struggle is for vast blessings. The enemy seeks to despoil you, to cast you out of Heaven. Yet God, willing you to gain more, may enhance your struggles at times, as He did with Abraham, whose last conflict was about his child. Even things intolerable will be tolerable when their removal is near and the reward great.

Remember that you are not alone in this. Many saints before you have endured the same conflict, and the Apostle Paul himself prayed to be delivered from evil men, for he faced those who were wild beasts rather than men. He called for the prayers of the church that he might be delivered, and he took comfort that his struggles refreshed both himself and the faithful. So too, your endurance in this trial can refresh your own soul and become a source of strength for others.

You have received the Spirit of adoption, being delivered from the curse and given sonship. Fix your mind on the heavenly wisdom, and do not let today’s evil cast you down from the hope set before you. Walk in the Way that leads to the kingdom, and let patience do its perfect work. The Lord is near; pray that you enter not into temptation, and know that He who allowed the trial will also make a way for your deliverance.

The sting you feel is real, and Scripture does not pretend otherwise. Evil, at its core, is anything that tears down and destroys. When those who should build you up instead choose words and actions that wound, that is a form of evil you are enduring. God hates evil precisely because He loves His children and hates to see them destroyed. The beginning of wisdom is learning to share that hatred, not hating the person, but clearly recognizing and rejecting the destructive thing itself.

The command to honor your father and mother is a bedrock of society, and it carries a promise of well-being. But the apostle’s careful phrase, “in the Lord,” acts as a vital boundary. If a parent demands something improper, something that violates God’s design, you are not required to participate in the sin to honor them. You honor them by refusing to join in what would harm them, you, and your relationship. When evil is being done, the most honoring thing you can do is to depart from it, trusting that this path leads to health and strength for your own soul, even when it feels isolating.

Jesus knew what it was to have His own family misunderstand, reject, and even think He had lost His mind. A prophet is not without honor except among his own family. He experienced the deep sorrow of alienation from his blood relatives. Yet He revealed a new and deeper family. The bonds we share with those who follow Him become tighter than even blood ties when our natural families are not part of that household of faith. In this new family, you find those who build up, not tear down. Your center of gravity is not in the opinions or treatment you receive within your earthly home, but in your identity in Christ.

Do not envy the seeming freedom of those who love evil and call good evil. The candle of the wicked is put out. Your task, by His grace, is to not let the evil you receive today take root in your own heart as bitterness or rebellion. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life. A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth good things. Let the treasure of His Word be the source from which you speak and act, even when faced with an evil day.

Pray with me. Father, keep Your child from the evil of despair and the evil of retaliation. Protect this heart from being destroyed by the actions of others. Give the courage to honor rightly, the wisdom to depart from what is sinful, and the deep security of knowing their place in Your eternal family through Jesus Christ. Amen.
