Draw closer to god

We hear your heart's desire to draw closer to God and to stay focused on Him and we join with you in this prayer, for this is the greatest pursuit of our lives and the one that brings true peace and direction.

We are encouraged that you want to be guided in the right direction, and Scripture promises that when we seek Him with our whole heart, He will answer. You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13. And James 4:8 tells us Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. God is not distant or reluctant, He delights to be close to His children, for it is good for me to come close to God. I have made the Lord Yahweh my refuge. Psalm 73:28.

We want to gently share something important we noticed, your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ. We want to make sure you know that it is only through Jesus that we can draw near to the Father and have full access to His presence and guidance. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. And there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is by placing our faith in Jesus, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are reconciled to God and can walk closely with Him daily. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, for He is the one who opens the way.

As you seek to keep your focus on God, we encourage you to seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33. Staying close to Him comes through spending time in His Word, through prayer, and through trusting Him in all things. Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105. When we acknowledge Him in every decision, He promises to direct us. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we thank You for this heart that longs to be closer to You. We ask that You draw this dear one near and help them to feel Your presence each day. Lord, help them to keep their eyes fixed on You and not be distracted by the cares and noise of this world. Guide them in the right direction according to Your perfect will, make their paths straight, and give them wisdom to discern Your voice and follow it. Fill them with a hunger for Your Word and for prayer, and help them to seek You with all their heart. Strengthen their faith in Jesus and assure them of Your love and forgiveness through Him. Lead them in Your truth and keep them close to You all the days of their life. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We are so glad you shared this desire to stay close to God and be guided by Him. That longing itself is a good place to be, and we want to walk with you in it.

Wanting to keep your focus on God can sometimes feel like you have to try harder to get it right in the moment. We have found it helps to think of it more like training than trying. Just as no one runs a marathon without steady, small steps over time, drawing closer to God grows through simple, regular rhythms that slowly shape our hearts. It is less about one big effort and more about staying faithful in little ways and seeing yourself as a work in progress.

One practical way to live that out this week might be to choose one small, consistent practice rather than a long list. For many, it helps to pick the same time and place each day for a few quiet minutes to pray honestly and read a short portion of Scripture, and to share what you are learning with one trusted believer or pastor who can encourage you and help you discern next steps. Consistency matters more than length.

We are praying for you to know God's nearness and clear direction as you keep turning to Him.

Father, we bring our friend before You and thank You for the desire You have placed in their heart to be close to You. Draw them nearer, quiet distractions, and gently guide their steps. Give wisdom for each decision and peace in trusting You day by day. Lead them in the right direction as they seek You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire to draw closer to God and to be kept in focus upon Him is itself a gracious working of His Spirit within you, for no man seeks the Lord unless the Lord first seeks him.

There is great wisdom in the prayer you have offered, to say with the Psalmist, My God, You shall guide me with Your counsel. Of all beings, God is most easy of access, and He has promised, Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Since you cannot come back to mend yesterday, seek to do that which is right each day and to obey your God every hour you live.

How then does God guide us and keep us near to Himself. First, by the general directions of His Word. If you would know what God would have you to do, come to the Law and to the Testimony and test everything by what is there spoken. It is there you hear His voice, and it is there you learn His way. We sometimes go to prayer and want God to hear us, but we have not heard what God has to say. Be not slow to hear when God is swift to cheer you and to instruct you.

Secondly, we draw near to God only through Jesus Christ. There can be no coming of God to us, and no going of our soul to God, except through the highway of communion, Jesus Christ, the Man and yet the God. The very term we use for prayer is, Let us draw near unto God, and we never get to God in prayer unless it is through pleading the precious blood. For Christ gave Himself for sinners, the Just for the unjust, to bring us to God. He is Himself God, without spot or blemish, and having finished the work which was given Him to do, He is near to God in acceptance. And for all who are one with Him, to be in Christ is to be ever near to God also.

Therefore, he that comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Come to Him as you actually are, and ask Him to deal with you in Christ Jesus according to your actual condition. Do not try to make yourself out to be righteous, but come as a sinner to a God ready to pardon, who delights to show mercy. Acquaint yourself now with Him, and be at peace, thereby good shall come unto you.

May the Lord grant you grace to keep this delightful commerce with Him which begins when God becomes your Guide and continues throughout your life. May He keep your foot holding His steps and your heart keeping His way, and may the Spirit of God daily draw you to Christ, and through Christ to the Father, that you may walk in His counsel and rest in His nearness.

We will pray for you, that the Lord will keep you close, fix your eyes upon Christ, and guide you in the right direction according to His perfect will, until He receives you to glory.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
