It is no small comfort that the Lord hears even the sigh of His afflicted ones. When the heart is too burdened for words, that gentle groaning reaches His ear and stirs His fatherly pity. “For the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord.” He is a Friend at hand, who needs not a full petition; a sigh fetches Him to our aid as surely as the moan of a babe brings the mother from her bed. Pour out your heart, then, before Him, for He careth for you.
In this matter of the doctor’s pen and the court’s proceedings, you have a great Arbitrator in heaven. Christ Jesus is the Daysman who can lay His hand upon both parties, knowing every point of law and yet having a fellow-feeling with your infirmity. Spread the case before Him as Hezekiah did that letter, and leave it to His wise decision. He can turn the doctor’s heart as rivers of water are turned, and He can make the court case to melt away like a morning mist. Only commit your cause entirely into His hand; once He decides it on the principles of justice and mercy, none can revive it again.
Yet remember, we are often kept in the school of faith, and the Lord sometimes delays that we may learn to look solely to Him. If the trial must come, He will be with you in the fire, and though you feel as if you could scarcely endure the flame, He can enable you to stand and sing psalms there, as His martyrs have done. Let not the fear of man bring a snare. The deceitfulness of sin would whisper that a little evasion might spare you much trouble, but stand upright in this matter. If you are called upon to speak the truth, do it with a holy boldness, trusting the Spirit to give you utterance.
Yet pray on, and pray again, even seven times. Sinner, have you prayed? Pray once more. It is time to seek the Lord, till He come and rain righteousness upon you. Peradventure, even now, while you are reading these words, He is already arising, and the cloud of mercy is gathering, though it be but the size of a man’s hand. The whole matter is in those hands that were pierced for you; therefore be not afraid. Only believe, and you shall see the salvation of God.
