Disrespectful coworker

Coworker of mine has been disrespecting a lot of my other coworkers. Recently I got a promotion and he has been extra competitive and bossy with me. He says he should have got it and keeps trying to diminish my work or correct me infront of management. Hes acting very immature and i try to just ignore him. Tomorrow I will be working one on one with him for most of my shift. I am dreading it a bit. Asking for prayer over this. For it to turn out okay and maybe calm his emotions. Take away that competitive spirit.

We hear your struggle and lift this situation before the Lord, asking for His peace and wisdom to guide you. The Bible tells us in Romans 12:18, "If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men." While you cannot control your coworker’s behavior, you can choose to respond with grace and humility, trusting God to work in the hearts of those around you.

This situation is an opportunity for you to reflect Christ in the workplace. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Even when faced with disrespect, responding with kindness and patience can disarm hostility and bring glory to God. We also recognize that pride and envy are at the root of your coworker’s actions, Proverbs 13:10 warns, "Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice." His competitive spirit is not of God, and we rebuke it in Jesus’ name.

We pray that tomorrow, the Lord would fill you with supernatural peace and confidence in your role. May He guard your heart from frustration or bitterness and help you to see this coworker through His eyes, as someone in need of grace, just as we all are. Let us pray:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, asking for Your intervention in this workplace conflict. Lord, we lift up [this situation] to You, asking that You would soften this coworker’s heart and remove any spirit of competition, envy, or pride that is driving his actions. Fill [the person who submitted the request] with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and help them to respond with wisdom, humility, and grace. May Your love shine through them, even in difficult interactions. Give them the strength to rise above pettiness and to honor You in their work. We declare that no weapon formed against them will prosper, and we ask that You turn this situation for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen."

Remember, God has placed you in this position for a reason, and He will equip you to handle whatever comes your way. Colossians 3:23-24 encourages us, "And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." Keep your focus on Him, and trust that He will vindicate you in His timing.

If this coworker continues to act inappropriately, consider speaking to management privately about the issue, but do so with a spirit of seeking resolution, not retaliation. Above all, continue to walk in love, knowing that your character is being refined through this trial.

A promotion is a meaningful milestone, and it makes sense you would feel both thankful and uneasy when a coworker responds with competition instead of support. Dreading a long one on one shift after he has been correcting you in front of management is completely understandable.

What you are describing often comes from disappointment that spills over as rivalry, and his reaction says more about his own frustration than about the quality of your work. Ignoring it has helped you keep things from escalating, and for tomorrow it may help to go in with a simple plan for staying steady.

Before your shift, take a few quiet minutes to pray and settle your heart, and decide ahead of time on a couple of brief, professional responses you can use if he tries to diminish your work, like a calm thank you and then quietly continuing your task. Keeping answers short and even often lowers the tension and lets your work speak for itself. If you get a break, step away for a moment to reset. If this pattern continues beyond tomorrow, it would be wise to keep a private note of what happens and talk with a trusted manager when needed.

Father, we bring this shift before You and ask for peace over our friend tonight and steadiness tomorrow. Give wisdom for each conversation, calm restless emotions, and guard the work being done. The burden you have described from your workplace has been brought before the Lord, and we have joined you in prayer concerning it. To be placed in a position where another watches with envy, and seeks to diminish what God has entrusted to you, is a trial that tests the heart, yet it is not without purpose in the hand of God.

You do well to ask that the competitive spirit may be taken away and that peace may rule in your coming together. Scripture teaches us that before honor is humility, and before destruction is pride. When promotion comes, as it has to you, it brings with it one of the peculiar trials of humility, for the possession of ability or advancement may tempt both the one who receives it and the one who desires it. There are many sorts of pride, and it shows itself as much in envying and correcting another before others as in boasting.

We would exhort you to serve the Lord with all humility of mind in this very place where He has set you. There is a humility before the service, a humility during the service, and a humility when all is done. Humility is not to think less of yourself than you ought, nor is it a humility which lives only in the face. The throne of humility must be the heart, and it must be genuine, for the imitation of it is near akin to pride itself. To make a right estimate of yourself before God is true humility, and such humility is the herald which goes before honor.

This same humility is the friend of prayer. The proper attitude of prayer is to be prostrate before the throne, and those considerations which make toward humility are the very strength of prayer. You may come boldly yet lowly, and say with the patriarch, I am not worthy of the least of all thy mercies. When faith and humility go together, they do not injure one another, but go hand in hand to heaven like a brave brother and a fair sister, the one bold as a lion, the other meek as a dove. Your faith may say a word from Christ is enough, and your humility will say how unworthy you are of that word, and both together will keep you.

If your heart is right, the situation may be difficult but the difficulty is to be overcome, and out of that difficulty shall arise an excellence which you had not otherwise known. We pray that you may not merely ignore the provocation, but may overcome it with grace, not rendering contempt for contempt, but showing the meekness of Christ who endured malice and envy and contempt and yet overcame.

We have prayed for you for tomorrow, that the Lord would calm every heated emotion, take away the competitive spirit that stirs strife, and give to both you and your fellow laborer a quiet and gentle spirit. May He give you wisdom to speak and to be silent in due season, to do your work faithfully as unto the Lord and not unto men, and to bear any correction or slight with patience. May He also work in the heart of your coworker, to turn him from envying to peace, and to show him that honor comes not by striving but by the Lord's hand.

May the Lord, who is the lover of humility and the Author of faith, steep you in both, keep you in perfect peace as you lean upon Him, and make your conduct in that one on one season to be a testimony of grace. We ask that He will let all be done in a manner that adorns the gospel, and that you may return from that shift with a conscience void of offence and a heart kept by His power.

Grant Your child wisdom, patience, and confidence to handle the shift with grace. Let their work speak for itself and shut down any attempts to diminish or correct them unjustly.
