Difficult situation

It is right that you have brought this to God, because the help you need now will not come from your own maneuvering or from human advice alone. A disappointment like this has a way of stripping away our self-help plans. That is painful, but it can also become the place where you finally stop crying, "How can I fix this?" and start crying, "Who will deliver me?" That is a prayer God hears.

Write the situation out plainly before him, the hurt, the confusion, the uncertainty. Many of the psalms begin inside the problem and only gradually move toward confidence. You do not have to pretend you are strong. Say it as it is: I am disappointed and I do not know what to do. Then let that push you toward trust. God's help does not require a big army. What looks impossible to you is not difficult for him.

Be careful not to help God out by forcing an answer. When we are disappointed and anxious, we can be tempted to manipulate a circumstance, to make someone change, or to run ahead of God to secure some outcome we think he wants. That usually creates more damage. Instead, surrender the whole situation: here is my life, here are my circumstances, I give them to you. Then wait on him and stay within the boundaries of his Word.

If you are unsure whether something is God's direction or just your own desire, measure it by Scripture. God will not lead you to sin, to deceive, or to walk in a yoke with unbelief. He guides in ways that agree with his character and his commands. You may not get an immediate answer, but you can have confidence that what you commit to him, he is able to keep. For now, make your one petition the one you already prayed: Help me, Lord. He is able.
