God, like parents, gives a period of time for the demands of infants who only know how to cry for milk. There comes a time that, as we desire the milk of the Word (1 Peter 2), we "grow up in respect to our salvation" to see that God is not like Santa Claus, just there for us to bring lots of presents and we give him milk and cookies : )
The Lord's Prayer is the most profound prayer ever taught to man and every prayer Jesus ever prayed that is recorded in Scripture has elements of it contained within it. How could we ever graduate from asking God that His Kingdom advances in the earth and that only His will would be done all the time?
Sadly most believers ever get past knowing the God of Ezekiel 2 or Isaiah 6 or Revelation 4 or Daniel 7-11 or the God of The Great White Throne any more than a heavenly santa claus. The Lord's Prayer, however, teaches us to honor all the 20 some different Names of God in Scripture (Shepherd, Captain of The Lord of Armies, The Lord who Sanctifies, The Lord our Rightousness, et cetera) and frees us from "gimme gimme gimme" prayers that like a plague have spread throughout American Christianity since the Lord's Prayer was removed from schools by the devil who has stolen so so much from America after prayer and Bible were removed by the Supreme Court in 1962-1963.
Whereas we never loose a childlike posture in prayer in asking for big things from a big Daddy, let's see that God is holy and Jesus gave us some items to pray about to our "Dad in Heaven" like caring The Family Reputation (His Name) is Honored, and His Word being taught correctly. Let's show Jesus a little effort at obeying what He said to pray about. Thank you.
