Depression, health and anxiety

Speatown

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for me. I struggle with depression and anxiety. Lately my anxiety is really bad because I'm having some health issues and I might need surgery to prevent cancer. I get awful sensations in my body. Please pray that God would heal me because I don't think I can take much more.

We hear your cry for help, and our hearts ache with yours as you walk through this valley of deep struggle. Depression and anxiety are heavy burdens, and when compounded with health concerns, they can feel overwhelming. But we want you to know that you are not alone, God sees you, He hears you, and He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). The sensations you describe, the fear of what may come, and the weight of uncertainty are not too much for Him to carry. We stand with you in prayer, believing that His healing power is real and His grace is sufficient for you (2 Corinthians 12:9).

First, we must address the foundation of our faith. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life to Jesus, confessing Him as Lord and believing in your heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9). He is the Great Physician, not only of the body but of the soul, and He longs to bring you peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Now, let us lift you up in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up our dear brother/sister who is struggling under the weight of depression, anxiety, and health concerns. Lord, You are the God who sees, the God who heals, and the God who sustains. We ask that You would touch their body and bring healing to every area of concern. If surgery is needed, we pray for skilled hands, wisdom for the doctors, and a smooth recovery. Father, we rebuke the spirit of fear that has taken hold, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Replace their anxiety with Your perfect peace, and their despair with hope in Your promises.

Lord, we ask that You would draw near to them in a tangible way. Let them feel Your presence like a warm embrace, reminding them that they are never alone. Strengthen their faith, Lord, and help them to cast every care upon You, for You care for them (1 Peter 5:7). Surround them with Your angels, protect them from the enemy’s lies, and fill their heart with the assurance of Your love. We declare healing over their body, mind, and spirit, in Jesus’ name.

We also want to encourage you with the truth of God’s Word. The psalmist wrote, “Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence” (Psalm 42:5). Even in the midst of your struggle, God is working. He is close to you, and He is able to do immeasurably more than you can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). We encourage you to cling to His promises, to speak them over your life, and to resist the lies of the enemy that tell you this pain will never end.

If your health concerns are causing you to fear the worst, remember that God is your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). He is not a God of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33), and He will guide you through this season. Seek wise counsel from medical professionals, but also seek the Lord in prayer and His Word. Let your heart be anchored in the truth that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

We also want to gently remind you that your worth is not defined by your health, your struggles, or your circumstances. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and God has a purpose for your life that goes beyond this moment of pain. Do not lose heart, for though outwardly you may be wasting away, inwardly you are being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). This season will not last forever, and God is using it to shape you into the person He created you to be.

If you are feeling isolated in your struggle, we encourage you to reach out to a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor who can walk alongside you. Depression and anxiety can make you feel like you are alone, but God often works through the hands and feet of His people to bring comfort and support. Do not suffer in silence, let others help carry your burden (Galatians 6:2).

Finally, we rebuke any spirit of despair or hopelessness that has taken root in your heart. The enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that you may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). We declare that you are a child of God, redeemed by the blood of Jesus, and nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-39). We speak healing, peace, and restoration over your life, and we believe that God will bring you through this trial stronger in faith and closer to Him.

Continue to seek the Lord in prayer, even when it feels hard. Pour out your heart to Him, for He is your refuge (Psalm 62:8). Trust in His timing, His plan, and His love for you. And remember, we are standing with you in prayer, believing that God is at work even now. You are loved, you are valued, and you are not forgotten.

Thank you for trusting us with this. The weight of health concerns tangled together with depression and anxiety is incredibly heavy, and we want you to know you are not facing this alone right now. When your body keeps sending alarming signals and the threat of cancer and surgery looms, it makes complete sense that your anxiety feels unbearable and your spirit is worn thin. Please don’t judge yourself for feeling overwhelmed, even the most faithful can reach the end of their own strength.

As we pray, we also want to gently encourage you to keep your medical team fully informed, not just about the physical symptoms but about the anxiety and depression you’re enduring. Sometimes the intense sensations can be intertwined with a nervous system that’s already on high alert, and your doctors can help untangle that while addressing the root concerns. If you don’t already have a counselor or a trusted pastor to walk alongside you, that might be an important step, too, someone who can sit with you in the waiting and the unknowns without trying to fix you with quick answers.

We are asking the Lord to meet you in the middle of this right now. Father, in Jesus’ name, we lift up our brother or sister to You. You know the dread that comes with each new sensation, the exhaustion of constant fear, and the deep longing for healing. Please quiet the internal storm. Grant wisdom and clarity to every doctor and specialist involved, and surround this precious person with Your steady presence. When they cannot take much more, be their strength and their peace. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

It is a heavy burden you bear, and no wonder your spirit faints within you. The thorn of depression, the gnawing of anxiety, the dread of a surgeon's knife, these press hard, and the weak flesh cries out. But have you never learned that anxiety unfits a soul for the very trial it dreads? What good has your fretting accomplished? Has it brought one hour of sound sleep, or lightened the load by a grain? It brings no grist to the mill, no meal to the barrel. Cease from it, for it dishonors your Master and saps your strength.

The true healing for your spirit, and for your body if it be His will, lies not in brooding over symptoms but in flying to the great Physician. There is one plant of renown, one sacred Fountain opened on Calvary. Every leaf of that tree is for the healing of the nations, and its medicine goes to the root of the matter, the sin-sick soul. When Jesus dealt with the palsied man, He spoke pardon first: “Son, be of good cheer; thy sins are forgiven thee.” The pardon and the healing were one. Seek first the forgiveness that brings peace within; then trust your body to Him who bears our sicknesses. His cool hand can grasp your fevered hand, and He has power on earth to forgive sins and to raise up the lame.

Do not say, “I cannot endure more,” for He knows your frame and measures the trial to your need. The same Word that teaches the way of life is the channel by which healing virtue flows. Sit often under its sound, and listen with heedful ears, for faith comes by hearing. Cast yourself at the feet of Jesus with this one anxiety: that He would look upon you and save. He will in no wise cast you out. And if the healing tarries, remember you are on the road to eternal health. The life within you shall yet be perfect, world without end. Then let this transient sickness seem but a light affliction, soon swallowed up in glory. Rise, then, and minister to Him even in your weakness; let your heart cling to the hope that whether He heals by miracle or sustains by grace, He does all things well.

The pains you are enduring in body and mind are known to the Great Physician, and He has not left you without a hospital for your soul. This very gathering of the Church is a spiritual surgery, where every wound inflicted by the assaults of this world may be dressed and healed. Do not imagine that you must bear these terrors alone. The sensations that wrack your body and the dread that clouds your mind are not sent to destroy you, but to drive you into the arms of the Healer. Lay them before Him, here, in the sacred remedies of prayer, the Holy Scriptures, and the Table of His Body and Blood.

Anxiety and depression flourish in the soil of uncertainty, yet our Lord commands us to be anxious for nothing, to cast all care upon Him. Why are you over-anxious about the working of the Divine Physician, when you cannot even explain the movement of the wind? His Spirit bloweth where He listeth, and His ways are often hidden, but they are always good. The Good Shepherd needs no command to lay down His life for His sheep; He does it of His own will, out of a love that cannot fail. If He so loved you as to pour out His blood, will He not also with Himself freely give you all that is needful?

Do not despise the care of the body. Even the blessed Apostle Paul, in his tender anxiety for Timothy, prescribed a little wine for his stomach and his frequent infirmities. So too, use the physicians and the treatments God provides, and if surgery is required, submit to it as a means of His providence. Yet place your ultimate trust not in knives or medicines, but in the mercy of the Father of lights, who alone can heal both flesh and spirit.

The beauty of the body is fleeting and can be consumed by illness and anxiety in an hour; but the beauty of a soul resting in God, purified by patience, shall bloom eternally. This trial, however bitter, is but a season. It may be that you feel you can take no more, but His grace is sufficient for you, and His strength is made perfect in weakness. Do not demand immediate relief; seek rather the healing of the inward man, that you may hear the Bridegroom’s voice and rejoice greatly, even in the midst of the furnace. Come then, through fasting, prayer, and the counsel of the Church. The One who heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds shall bring you through the fire, and the smoke of your suffering shall ascend as incense before His throne.

I hear the weight in your words, the way the depression and anxiety have been pressing in, and now these health troubles and the threat of surgery have made everything feel unbearable. Those awful sensations in your body stoke the fear until you wonder how much more you can take. Please know that we are lifting you up in prayer, and I want to offer some direction for your soul in the middle of this.

Real stability begins with what Scripture calls the fear of the Lord. That can sound like more dread, but it is not a panic-stricken terror. It is a reverent awe, a settled choice to hate what God hates and love what He loves, to bow before His greatness and power. This is the true starting place of wisdom, and it anchors us when every other certainty gives way. Proverbs tells us, "Fear the Lord and depart from evil; it will be health to your body and strength to your bones." Your inward posture before God is deeply connected to your well-being. This doesn't mean that illness won't come, but that a soul reoriented toward Him can find calm even in the storm.

When the anxiety surges and the future looks like a wave about to crash over you, remember who your refuge really is. The psalmist declares, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea." If the mountains themselves slide into the ocean, you still have a hiding place that cannot be moved. Talk this truth to your own heart. David did that when his soul was cast down, speaking to himself and saying, "I shall yet praise Him who is the health of my countenance and my God." You can talk yourself out of the spiral by answering the fear with what God has promised. Do not let your own thoughts drag you deeper; instead, preach to yourself about His great goodness, which He has stored up for those who fear Him.

It is right to ask God for healing. A large portion of the Gospels is taken up with Jesus touching sick bodies and restoring them. The early church prayed earnestly for the sick, and we join in that now, asking the Lord to strengthen your body, to guide the doctors, and, if it be His will, to spare you from surgery or to make whatever comes fully effective. But we must also learn to hold our petitions with open hands. I have seen times when people prayed in faith for a completely clean report, yet the situation turned out far more serious. The deep rest did not come from getting the answer they wanted, but from finally saying, "Lord, it's in Your hands. You take care of it. Whatever comes, I trust You." That is where the wrestling quiets and peace takes over. Commit the whole matter into His keeping.

There is also a very real link between the prosperity of your soul and your physical frame. Your attitudes and thought patterns can actually alter your body's chemistry. While you wait on the Lord, do not neglect caring for the body He has given you, proper rest, wise nourishment, not as a frantic attempt to control the outcome, but as a simple act of stewardship. All of this flows from fearing the Lord and departing from evil, rather than leaning on your own understanding.

You are not forgotten. We are praying that God Himself will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being taken. He is your very present help right now, and He does not mock the cries of His people. Lay hold of Him and refuse to let the terror of the unknown have the final word.
