Silas
Beloved of All
Depression, anxiety, and fear can feel like a crushing weight that isolates you and fills every quiet moment with dread. It is in exactly these deep waters that our souls are being called to learn a different kind of reliance. The wilderness is never the destination; it is the place where we discover that trusting in God is the only solid ground. He allows these seasons not to destroy you, but so that you may know Him as your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
The fear that now grips your heart is not the kind of fear that leads to life. There is a profound difference between being overcome by a spirit of anxiety and walking in the fear of the Lord. That holy reverence hates evil and is the very beginning of wisdom. When we choose to fear the Lord and depart from evil, the promise that follows is health to your body and strength to your bones. Your mental state and your physical well-being are deeply connected, and as you nurture the prosperity of your soul by crying out to God, you are placing yourself in the path of His healing grace.
Do not let your emotions dictate what is true. An emotional experience can bring a fleeting moment of relief, like a fan cheering at a game, only to wake up the next day with the same defeat. Lasting change comes when your faith is anchored in the facts of God's Word, not in how you feel at any given moment. You can actually talk yourself out of depression by refusing to listen to the lies that whisper you are alone or beyond help. Instead, speak to your own soul and command it to hope in God. The psalmist did this in distress, saying, “I shall yet praise Him who is the health of my countenance and my God.”
The threats and distress of this world are real, but what can they truly do to the one whose life is hidden in Christ? God declares, “I will mock when your fear comes.” The destruction that terrifies the world does not have the final say over you. Even if the earth should be removed and the mountains carried into the heart of the sea, you do not need to fear. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He is your confidence and will keep your foot from being taken.
We are praying that your physical and emotional health will match the prosperity of your soul as you seek Him. In your distress, cry out to the Lord. His ear is open to the righteous, and He hears you. Let this trial drive you into the arms of the living God, who alone can turn your fear into peace and your mourning into praise.
