Deliverance

Thank you for sharing this burden for your son. The love of a parent for a child is deep, and God understands that love fully. We are joining you in prayer for him.

We believe Jesus Christ, the Son of God, cares about the whole person, both body and soul. Scripture shows His power over sickness and physical infirmity, and also His power to forgive sin and heal the hurts of the heart. The prophet Isaiah spoke of the Messiah bearing our sicknesses as well as our sins, and Matthew applies that to physical healing. When Jesus took the bread and said this is my body broken for you, He was pointing to a work that touches both spiritual and physical need.

Much about healing remains a mystery to us. We do not fully understand why some are healed quickly and others experience healing more slowly. Even the apostle Paul prayed three times for a painful affliction to be removed and learned that God had a different purpose in that season. What we do know is that God does heal, and that He often heals gradually. There is only one gradual healing recorded in the ministry of Jesus, but Scripture shows that gradual healing is still real healing. God has built wonderful processes of restoration into the human body, and those natural processes are no less divine because God Himself created them.

For that reason we are praying for your son in two ways. First, for safe and steady progress toward a healthy weight. That kind of change is often gradual, through wisdom, discipline, and daily stewardship of the body God has given. We pray God will give him strength, self control, good counsel, and healthy habits, and that any steps he takes would be safe and sustainable. Second, for healing from past hurts. Wounds in the mind and emotions can leave scars as real as physical ones, and Jesus is able to bring healing there as well, bringing peace where there has been pain and restoring what has been broken inside.

We do not presume to tell God what He must do, but we do come with confidence to the Father through the Son. The Father gave His only Son whom He loves for our sake, so we know His heart toward us is love. And because Jesus is truly the Son of God, we can trust Him with both the physical and the inner needs of your son.

Father, we lift this son to You in the name of Jesus. We ask for Your hand upon his body, for health, for wisdom for any decisions about diet, activity and care, and for safety in the process of losing weight. We ask also for Your healing upon his heart and mind from past hurts, that You would mend what has wounded him and bring wholeness and peace. Give him hope and perseverance, and give his parent comfort and strength as they love and support him. We trust him to Your care and Your will. Amen.
