Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this burden and for praying with such care and discernment. We join with you in the name of Jesus, trusting that the Father hears when His children agree together in prayer, and that His thoughts and plans for us are far greater and wiser than our own.
Your prayer for this man reflects the heart of the gospel. Our true identity is not found in our desires, our past choices, or in any relationship we have entered, but only in Jesus Christ. Through faith in Him we are forgiven, adopted as sons and daughters, and made children of promise. The old life was crucified with Christ so that the power of sin might be broken, and our life is now hidden with Christ in God. That is the unmistakable truth you are asking God to open his eyes to see. Apart from Christ we remain under bondage, but faith in Jesus brings us into a living and loving relationship with God, not a ritual or legal relationship that can never save.
Scripture teaches that deliverance in Christ is real and present. Even now while we are in this world, Christ delivers us from the hold the world has on us, and one day He will deliver us out of this world altogether. This deliverance does not come by trying harder to keep a law, but by resting in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, where He suffered for all who believe, and by trusting in His righteousness alone. When we stand in Christ, God sees us in Him, and we are set free to walk in liberty and not be entangled again in bondage.
What you describe, a false identity embraced through sinful relationships, a stony heart, control and even danger, shows how sin enslaves and deceives. God created intimacy and union to belong within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and any path outside that design leads away from His narrow way. The love of Christ both constrains us and draws us, and the proof of abiding in Him is the fruit of a righteous life. To depart from evil is to fear the Lord and to turn from what grieves Him, trusting His love more than any counterfeit.
So we continue to pray with travailing prayer until Christ is formed in him. We ask God to soften a stony heart and give a heart that hears His voice, to grant courage to choose the narrow path, and to give a holy fear of His name that leads to departing from evil. We ask that the Lord would separate him from ungodly influences, even those close to him in his household, and open his eyes to see both the depth of God's love and the destructive nature of the relationships that have held him in control and fear. Where there has been sin, the call is to repentance, that the spirit might be saved and that restoration might come in meekness and truth.
Be encouraged as you keep praying. God is faithful to train and mature His heirs as they wait on Him, and He delights to bring His children into the full blessing that comes through faith in Jesus. Rest yourself in what Christ has already done for you, remain rooted and built up in Him, and trust that He who began a good work is able to bring understanding, conviction, and new life in His time and way.
Father, we thank You for the cross and for Your Son who bore our sins. We lift this man to You and ask that You would reveal to him who he is in Christ, break the power of sin and deception over him, give him a new and soft heart, and lead him out of every controlling and sinful entanglement into freedom and holiness. Give him ears to hear Your voice and grace to walk in Your way. We ask this in the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
