We are truly saddened to hear about your daughter being in a toxic relationship and we are here to support you in prayer and counsel. Firstly, we need to address the elephant in the room, the use of the phrase 'toxic relationship' instead of identifying the situation for what it is and we thank you for the information and will pray and advice accordingly. We are also concerned that Jesus was not mentioned and we will address that as well.
Let us first acknowledge that the Bible is clear about relationships. It says in 2 Corinthians 6:14 WEB "Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" This verse highlights the importance of being in a relationship with someone who shares your faith and values.
If your daughter is a Christian, and she is in a toxic relationship with another Christian, then she is still in violation of God's commands to have a wholesome relationship. If the other person is not a Christian Believer then it is even more concerning to find out she is in a courtship with an unbeliever. Also, if the other person is engaging in inappropriate behavior, then there are further violations.
Concerning sexual behavior outside of marriage, whether it is with a Christian Believer or an unbeliever, it is still fornication. Yet, concerning unbelievers, it is written in 1 Corinthians 6:15-16 WEB "Don't you know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! Or don't you know that he who is joined to a prostitute is one body? For, 'The two,' says he, 'will become one flesh.'" This strongly condemns sex outside of marriage, but even more so with an unbeliever.
Also, if your daughter is having sex outside of marriage then she is committing fornication and this is a direct sin against her own body. It is written in 1 Corinthians 6:18 WEB "Flee sexual immorality! 'Every sin that a man does is outside the body,' but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body."
We think it is very important to identify the relationship for what it is. If your daughter is not married to this person, then they are not to be having sex. If they are having sex, then they need to stop this immediately and consider their position before the Lord. If this is not addressed then their eternal security is in question. It is written in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 WEB "Or don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit the Kingdom of God."
In the middle of this we are reminded that it is only by the name of Jesus Christ that we are saved. It is written Acts 4:12 WEB "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"
The fact that Jesus was not mentioned is very concerning. This is a basic tenant of the Christian Faith. It is written in Acts 4:10 WEB "be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in him does this man stand here before you whole." We would encourage everyone to make sure to pray in Jesus' name and make Jesus the center of their prayer life.
Let us also address the specific issue of a boyfriend relationship. In the Strong's concordance the word boyfriend only appears once in the Bible in Song of Solomon 5:16 "This is my beloved, and this is my boyfriend, daughters of Jerusalem." This word is from the Hebrew word 'dod' and is a transliteration, not a translation. This word only appears 6 times in the Old Testament. This same word in Song of Solomon 1:13 is translated 'my beloved'. The word boyfriend is not an accurate translation in the English language. No where else in the Bible is the word boyfriend used in the original Hebrew or Greek.
Let us also address the issue of boyfriends in general. The Bible does not support the idea of boyfriends and girlfriends. It does support the idea of courtship in the context of a godly marriage and does support the idea of a betrothal. The idea of a boyfriend and girlfriend is a modern concept and is not supported in the Bible. It is written in 1 Corinthians 7:2 WEB "But because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband." This verse is very clear that the only way to avoid sexual immorality is to be married.
We would encourage you to pray for your daughter and to seek the Lord's will in this situation. We would also encourage you to speak to your daughter about the dangers of being in a relationship with an unbeliever and the dangers of sexual immorality. We would encourage you to pray for your daughter's salvation and for her to seek the Lord's will in her life.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father,
We come before you today to lift up this daughter and her family to you. Lord, we pray that you would give them wisdom and guidance in this situation. We pray that you would open your daughter's eyes to the dangers of being in a relationship with an unbeliever and the dangers of sexual immorality. We pray that you would give her the strength to walk away from this relationship and to seek your will in her life. We pray that you would give her family the wisdom and guidance to support her in this situation. We pray that you would bring conviction to her heart and that she would repent of her sins and turn to you. We pray that you would bring healing and restoration to her life. We pray that you would bring a godly spouse into her life that would honor and cherish her. We pray all of these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
