Dad in ICU, and not stable - lung cancer

We have received your request and are praying with you for your father and for your whole family in this very heavy and uncertain hour.

We are asking the Lord to have mercy on your father, to be near to him in the ICU, to give skill and wisdom to the doctors who are caring for him, and to give you and your family clarity and peace as you must make difficult decisions together. We pray for his comfort, for relief from distress, and above all that he would know the hope that is only in Jesus Christ, who bore our dying in His own body that His life might be made manifest in us.

These moments press upon the heart with great weight, when one path carries serious risk and the other means accepting that no further procedure may help. Do not feel you must answer in confusion or haste. As you seek the Lord, seek also wise and unhurried counsel together. Ask the medical team to explain clearly what the stent might offer and what it might cost to his strength, what hospice care would mean in terms of comfort and dignity, and whether there is time to gather as a family, to pray, and to listen to one another with patience and love. Unity and careful thought before the Lord are more valuable now than a rushed decision.

We do not know how many days God has appointed, but we know that every life is precious in His sight and that our times are in His hands. Whether He grants healing in this life or calls His child home, His promise remains that for those who die with Christ we shall also live with Him. If your father knows the Lord, remind him of that hope. If you are unsure of his faith, let love move you to speak gently of Christ, to pray with him, to read Scripture at his bedside, and to invite a trusted pastor or chaplain to minister to him.

We are praying now for you:

Father in heaven, we lift this dear father to You. You know his body, his lungs, his every breath. Have mercy and grant wisdom to all who care for him. Give this family Your peace that passes understanding, a spirit of unity, and ears to hear Your voice. If it is Your will, restore him and sustain him. In either outcome, draw him and each member of this family closer to Jesus, in whose name alone is salvation and eternal life. Comfort them, uphold them, and let them know they are not alone. Amen.

Please keep seeking the Lord, stay close to one another, and lean on your local church for continued prayer and support. We will continue to remember you, your father, and your family before the Lord.

Hearing about your father in the ICU with lung cancer and this painful decision in front of your family weighs heavily on the heart, and I am praying for you all in this very difficult hour.

Life itself belongs to God. The Father has life in Himself and has given the Son to have life in Himself, and Jesus came to give His life for the world. He said His words are spirit and life, and that whoever hears His word and believes on the One who sent Him has everlasting life and has passed from death to life. That is the deepest comfort we have when breath is fragile and the body is weak. Our fathers ate daily bread and still died, but Jesus is the bread that came down from heaven, and to believe on Him is to have life that death cannot take away. If your father knows the Lord, he is held secure even now. If you are not sure where he stands with Jesus, please make that your first concern. There is still time to sit by his bed, to speak gently of the Savior, to pray with him, to let him hear the words of life. To have the Son is to have life, and that promise is for all who will believe.

Jesus also showed us how to walk through hard decisions. He said He came not to do His own will but the will of Him who sent Him, and He did only what He saw the Father doing. He submitted Himself fully to the Father, even praying not my will but Yours be done, and He invites us to learn of Him so we can know the Father truly. The Father who notices when a sparrow falls is not distant from your father's room. He sees every detail, He cares for every member of your family, and He invites you to bring this burden to Him and to learn from Jesus in it. His yoke is easy and His burden is light, not because decisions become easy, but because we are not carrying them alone.

For the medical decision itself, there is no simple formula, and God gives wisdom as we ask Him. A risky procedure that might help but might also cause great suffering, and the option of hospice which focuses on comfort and peace, are both weighty paths. Hospice is not abandoning your father or giving up on him. It can be a way of entrusting him to the Lord's care, keeping him comfortable, honoring his dignity, and allowing the family to surround him with love and prayer. Pursuing a procedure is not wrong either if there is reasonable hope it could relieve his suffering and align with his wishes. Seek clear counsel from his doctors. Ask them plainly what the procedure can and cannot do, what recovery would look like, what pain it would involve, and what they believe his wishes would be if he could speak. Seek unity as a family, listen to one another, and pray together for the Lord to make His will clear and to give you peace together in the decision you make.

Whatever you decide, keep your eyes on Jesus. He alone is the way and the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. To honor the Son is to honor the Father. Your father’s greatest need, and your family’s greatest hope, is not simply more days, but eternal life in Christ. Read Scripture quietly at his bedside, pray aloud for him, tell him you love him, and commit him into the Father’s keeping. The Lord who raised the widow’s son and called Jairus’ daughter to life is the same Lord who holds your father’s life in His hands right now.

May the Lord give you wisdom beyond your own understanding, may He guard your family from division and give you a shared mind and a quiet peace as you seek Him, and may He draw each of you close to Himself through this valley. I am praying that the entrance of His word would bring light and life to you all, that you would know His presence in that ICU room, and that whether by healing or by taking your father home to Himself, God would be glorified and your hearts would be upheld.

Father, we lift this dear father to You. You have life in Yourself and You give life. We ask for mercy, for wisdom for this family and for the doctors, for comfort for this father, and above all for the assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Keep this family in Your name and let them know Your peace that passes understanding. In Jesus’ name, amen.
