cultural exchange program stole my money by

Beloved of All
cultural exchange program stole my money I used to be an exchange student at ###. So to make things short the host family (self proclaimed Christians) wasn't too happy about the way I present myself culturally so they sent me back after only two weeks with a letter containing OFFENSIVE racist judgmental remarks regarding reasons I was sent back. I was quite depressed, blamed myself, and actually took to heart everything said. Until later on I found out the whole thing was a scam. THERE WAS NO REFUND (the clerk from the organization who acted as the mediator to the exchange organization gave us a ###% refund, but then suspiciously resigned/disappeared). The host family I stayed with received funds from the government in exchange for hosting a student so they tried to get rid of me as soon as they got the money. I also read online reviews and some people said some hosts illegally received a portion of the tuition students paid to the exchange program. It broke my heart but please pray so that the Lord remove such vile organizations from such a greedy capitalist country who preyed on innocent students and what little money they had.

We hear the deep pain and betrayal in your heart, and we stand with you before the Lord, grieving over the injustice you’ve endured. What was meant to be an opportunity for cultural exchange and growth was twisted into a scheme that exploited your trust and left you wounded. The actions of this organization, and the so-called "Christian" host family, are a stark contradiction to the love, integrity, and justice that God commands. Their behavior is not only unethical but sinful, and we boldly declare that the Lord sees your suffering and will not let such wickedness go unanswered.

The Bible is clear that God hates injustice and oppression. Proverbs 14:31 says, "He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God." The greed and deception you encountered are an abomination in His sight. We also grieve over the racist and judgmental remarks made against you, such words have no place in the life of a true follower of Christ. James 2:9 warns, "But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors." The family’s claim to Christianity while acting in such a manner is a blasphemy against the name of Jesus, and we pray that the Lord would convict their hearts and lead them to genuine repentance.

We must also address the spiritual weight of this situation. You mentioned feeling depressed and blaming yourself, and while we understand the pain of being wronged, we want to gently remind you that your worth is not defined by the lies of broken people or corrupt systems. Psalm 34:18-19 assures us, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all." You are not forgotten, and your pain matters to God. He is your defender, and He will bring justice in His perfect timing.

We also want to speak truth over the anger you feel toward the "greedy capitalist country" and its systems. While it is right to be outraged by injustice, we must guard our hearts against bitterness, for it only harms us in the end. Hebrews 12:15 warns, "See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many." Instead, we pray that the Lord would use this experience to refine you, to deepen your compassion for others who are oppressed, and to fuel your desire to see His kingdom come, not just in one nation, but in all the earth.

Now, we lift this situation to the Lord in prayer:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who has been deeply wronged. Lord, You see the injustice, the deception, and the pain that has been inflicted. We ask that You would expose every hidden scheme of this organization and every unrepentant heart involved. Let Your light shine into the darkness, and let those who have profited from deceit be held accountable. We pray that You would dismantle systems that prey on the vulnerable and replace them with integrity and righteousness.

Father, we also pray for healing in our brother/sister’s heart. The words spoken against them were cruel and untrue, and we ask that You would uproot every lie they have believed about themselves. Remind them of their identity in You, fearfully and wonderfully made, loved beyond measure, and called for a purpose. Heal the wounds of betrayal and restore their joy. Give them wisdom as they navigate the aftermath of this experience, and provide for their needs in ways only You can.

Lord, we ask that You would soften the hearts of the host family. If they truly know You, convict them of their sin and lead them to repentance. If they do not, draw them to Yourself so they may know the truth and be set free from their hypocrisy. We also pray for the clerk who disappeared, may they find no peace until they make right what was done wrong.

Finally, Father, we ask that You would use this pain for good. Let it fuel a passion for justice in our brother/sister’s heart, and let them become a voice for others who have been silenced. May they find strength in You, and may their story one day be a testimony of Your faithfulness. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who came to bind up the brokenhearted and set the captives free. Amen."

In closing, we want to encourage you to hold fast to the truth that God is your vindicator. Romans 12:19 reminds us, "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'" You do not have to carry the burden of justice, God will handle it. In the meantime, surround yourself with believers who can speak life into you, and consider seeking godly counsel to process this trauma. You are not alone, and we stand with you in prayer.

We were really saddened to read what happened to you. To travel far from home hoping for welcome and growth, and then to be judged harshly for how you present yourself culturally, sent home quickly, and left with financial loss on top of it, that is a lot to carry. It makes sense that you blamed yourself at first, especially when those remarks were so personal, and also that you would feel heartbroken once you realized others may have been treated the same way.

What was said about you was not a true measure of your worth. Being mistreated after trusting an organization and a host family can leave a deep sting, and it is understandable you would want justice and protection for other students as well.

One step that has helped others after a confusing financial situation like this is to gather what you still have, letters, receipts, messages, the name of the clerk and organization, and keep them together in one place. If you feel able, you might ask a trusted pastor, school advisor, or a local consumer protection or legal aid clinic to look them over with you and help you understand what reporting options exist where you are. You don't have to sort it all out alone. And if the discouragement and heaviness from that season still lingers, please consider talking with a trusted counselor or pastor, alongside prayer.

Father, we lift this dear student to You. You see the hurt from those cruel words, the financial loss, and the disappointment underneath it all. Bring healing where shame took root, grant wisdom for any next steps, and protect other students from being harmed in this way. Lead with justice and mercy, and remind our friend each day that they are seen and valued by You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your sorrowful account has been heard with deep grief and earnest prayer. To travel far as a stranger, to be received for a short season and then thrust away with cruel and racist words, and to find that trust was met with deceit concerning money, is a wound that cuts both in heart and in estate. That you were made to bear reproach for your culture, and then to blame yourself for the sin of others, is a burden no tender conscience should be made to carry alone.

Our Lord knows well this kind of grief. He was betrayed by one who walked with Him, who had the bag and was trusted with the financial concerns, yet for silver delivered Him up. The prophecy was fulfilled that a familiar friend should lift up his heel against Him. If the Master was sold for money, His servants must not marvel if they too suffer from the love of money, which is the root of all evil. The fraud you describe, the taking of funds appointed for your good and the hasty sending away when the gain was secured, is a plain injustice before God and man, and He who sees in secret will not hold the greedy guiltless.

Yet hear the sweeter word which the Gospel brings, for there is forgiveness with God, that He may be feared. There is forgiveness, not for this sin or that only, but an absolute forgiveness, full and eternal, for every repenting and believing sinner through the blood of Christ. Jesus bore our punishment, that God might be just and yet the justifier of him that believeth. If you feel the weight of sin, whether your own or the bitter sense of being sinned against, look to Him. Do as Luther did when in dark distress and believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself. The record of debt is nailed to the Cross, and the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

And with forgiveness comes healing. The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ has healing virtue. He said to the palsied man, Thy sins be forgiven thee, and pardon and healing were one. May the Lord heal the depression and the inward bruising left by those offensive words. They were the judgment of unjust men, not the judgment of God. Your worth is not in their letter, but in that you are made in the image of God and, if you are in Christ, bought with a price and beloved forever. Let not their sin define you.

We will pray for you, and with you. We will ask the Lord to be your comforter and to lift this heaviness, to grant you peace in Christ and daily grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, for forgiveness is a joint stock business in which all Christians should take large shares. To forgive is not to say the wrong was not wrong, nor to forgo lawful and peaceable means to seek what is just. It is to leave vengeance to the Lord, who will by no means clear the guilty, while your own heart is loosed from bitterness.

We will pray also that the Lord in His providence would expose what is hidden, restrain those who prey upon the innocent and the poor, and move those in authority to do justice. Greed is not confined to one nation, for the heart of man is everywhere prone to covetousness, but wherever it shows itself, God calls it sin and will judge it. May He remove the power of such vile practices, protect other students from the same snare, and bring to repentance those who have done this evil, that they also might find there is forgiveness with Him if they turn.

Cast your care upon Him, seek godly counsel and, as you are able, the help of those who can advise you in these temporal matters, and rest your soul upon this certainty, that now, at this moment, there is forgiveness with God through Jesus Christ His Son, and with that forgiveness, healing for the wounded spirit.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your pain has been heard, and I grieve with you over what you suffered. To be welcomed as a guest and then sent away after only two weeks with cruel and racist words, to be made to feel that the fault was your own, to lose money that was worked for and saved, and then to learn that it may have been taken through deceit, is a heavy burden. It is no wonder you felt depressed and blamed yourself, but those insulting words do not define your worth, and the greed of others is not a measure of your value before God.

Scripture warns us where such betrayal comes from. One of the twelve betrayed his Lord for thirty pieces of silver, not because silver was so great, but because the love of money had made him beside himself. The prophet says the nations are as nothing before the Lord, yet for a small price a man handed over the One who is above all. That same tyranny, the love of gold, still drives people to use others for gain, to take what is not theirs, and to clothe their greed with fine words, even taking the name of Christian while showing no Christian love. When love is absent, even great claims of faith and knowledge and service are empty. True love is patient and restrains harshness, it does not use a person for profit and then cast them aside. What was done to you was not love, and God is not blind to it.

I understand the anger you feel toward those who wronged you and toward the system that allowed it. Yet be careful not to let that anger harden into hatred for a whole country or people, or into a desire for vengeance that would consume your own heart. God sees every hidden transaction and every false word, and He will judge with perfect justice. What is hidden will be brought to light. It is right to pray for justice and for wrongdoing to be exposed and stopped, and it is also right, where it is possible and wise, to seek help from honest counsel, to report what happened through proper and lawful channels, and to ask mature and trustworthy people to help you discern next steps. At the same time we are called to guard our own souls from bitterness, and to pray even for those who have done wrong, that they would come to repentance and turn from the love of money that has led them astray.

Do not continue to carry the false judgments that were written about you. Your identity and your culture are not to be despised, and your standing before God does not rest on the opinion of a host family or an organization, but on Christ who receives all who come to Him. He is gentle even to those who betray Him, and He is near to those who are wounded. As a physician does not cease treatment while sickness remains, so the Lord does not abandon His work in you. Though you have been wounded by many blows, He can heal and restore in His time, and even now He can use this sorrow to strengthen you and to teach you to cling more firmly to Him.

I will pray for you.

Heavenly Father, I bring this dear one before You who has been hurt, insulted, and defrauded. Comfort this heart, lift away self blame and heaviness, and remind this person daily that they are made in Your image and loved by You through Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation. Provide for what has been lost according to Your wisdom, grant peace that passes understanding, and give wisdom for any practical steps that should be taken. Bring to light what has been done in darkness, restrain those who prey on the vulnerable for the sake of money, and lead them to repentance and to true faith that shows itself in love. Guard this heart from bitterness and hatred, and form in it forgiveness and trust in Your righteous judgment. Keep this one in Your care and lead toward healing and hope. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

What you went through would leave anyone feeling hurt and betrayed, to be judged harshly for how you present yourself culturally, to be sent home after only two weeks with cruel and racist words, and then to carry the weight of depression and self blame, only to later learn it appears to have been driven by financial motives. It is right to grieve that loss, both the emotional wound and the real financial loss you suffered when tuition and expenses were not returned.

Scripture is honest about the fact that some people use positions of trust and authority for their own financial benefit. From the earliest days of the church there were examples of financial chaos and of people misusing what was entrusted to them, and God sees that clearly. He also sees when those who claim to follow Christ act in ways that do not reflect His character, for Jesus Himself went about doing good, bringing healing and encouragement, not harm. The Lord is not indifferent to injustice or to exploitation of the vulnerable, and it is right to ask Him to bring what is hidden into the light, to restrain those who prey on others, and to move those in authority to act justly.

At the same time, I want to gently encourage you to guard your own heart in the aftermath. The Bible warns to watch diligently lest any root of bitterness spring up and trouble you, and by it many become defiled. Bitterness is described as a gall that binds a person, and it ends up hurting the one who carries it more than anyone else. When a bitter spirit takes hold, it can spread to others and color how we see an entire people or nation. God does not want that bondage for you. It does not mean what was done to you was acceptable, it was not, but it does mean you do not have to keep drinking the poison of hatred toward a whole country or people. You can bring that anger and sorrow honestly to God and ask Him to keep your heart soft, to forgive those who wronged you as you seek His forgiveness and healing for yourself, and to prevent resentment from taking root.

Healing after this kind of wound is often not instant. In the ministry of Jesus some healings were immediate and some were gradual, and there is much about healing we do not fully understand. What we do know is that all true healing is from God, whether it comes quickly or slowly, whether it is physical, emotional, or deep in the mind and heart. He bore our infirmities and sorrows, and He is able to heal the scars left by rejection and by harsh words that you once took to heart. That healing can be a process where day by day He restores your sense of worth and peace, and puts your feet back on a straight and steady path.

I will pray for you, that the Lord would bring comfort to your heart and lift the heaviness you have carried, that He would heal the wounds left by those judgmental words and help you see yourself as He sees you, that He would provide for the financial loss and give wisdom about any lawful steps that may still be available to seek what is owed, that He would expose and restrain dishonest practices so that other students are not harmed, and that He would keep you from the gall of bitterness and fill you instead with His peace and joy. May He do a deep and lasting work in you, and keep you close to Jesus, who alone is our hope and salvation.
