Your prayer for your daughter's grandson, this little one of only months old who has been laid low with this sickness, has come before us and we take it up with you before the throne of grace.
What can an infant do for itself. It is as that deserted infant cast out in the open field, helpless and unable to speak for its own want, unable to find its way to any shelter. It cannot plead for itself, and therefore the Lord puts it into the hearts of others to plead for it. This is the very work of intercessory prayer, which is the sweetest prayer God ever hears, for it is the prayer of Christ Himself who ever lives to make intercession for us. And such prayer is exceedingly prevalent. It has stayed plagues, and it still prevails with God to bring down blessings from on high.
Do not think your prayer is too broken or too staggering to be heard. God will hear the prayer of a staggering man, and the prayer that has not any sense in it because the man who prays is at his wit's end. Though you were a long while before you prayed, He is not a long while before He answers. Let your prayer rise to His throne out of this low place, for He is very pitiful and will have compassion upon you in your misery.
We have a Good Physician whose healing power none can tell but those who have been healed. The Scripture says the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, to teach us that the least thing about Christ is healing. There is an abundance of healing virtue in Him, not only in His fruit but in His leaves, and those healing leaves can change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. Healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction in Him, and when the Sun of Righteousness rises upon us with healing in His wings, there is no need to say we are sick.
So let us plead with the Most High as Jacob did, spreading our case before Him and pressing our suit with all the arguments we can muster, and let our prayer be, Remember the Word unto Thy servant. Lord, Thou hast promised to be pitiful to the helpless, to hear the cry of those who call upon Thee, to show Thyself the God who heals. Remember Thy word and fulfill it toward this child.
We will join you in praying to that end.
O Lord our God, look in mercy upon this infant whom Thou hast made. Thou seest his weakness and his fever, and not one of his sighs is hidden from Thee. Lay Thy healing hand upon him and quicken him in Thy way. Spare him, we beseech Thee, and raise him up to health and strength, that his life may be spared to know Thee and to praise Thee. Give wisdom to those who care for him, and give peace to his mother and grandmother and all who love him, that they may rest in Thy good will. We ask this not because we are worthy, but because Thou art gracious, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. Amen.
