'Couldn't You Watch with Me?' - Mark 14:37

Then [Jesus] returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Couldn't you watch with me even one hour?"

Mark 14:37 NLT

Key Thought

How this situation must have hurt the Lord. My heart breaks for Jesus as he endures this time in Gethsemane. He knows he is going to the cross. He knows Judas will betray him. He knows his closest followers will abandon him. He knows that Peter will deny him. He knows the other ten will run away and leave him alone. He knows that he will be ridiculed and mocked. Now, knowing all of those things, he still does not have anyone care for him enough to pray with him an hour. I'm so thankful that the Lord knows what it feels like to be forsaken and let down by those closest to you. I'm also so very sad for him. Let's pray and work to never let him down like this ever again.

Today's Prayer

O Father, I am so sorry! Please, dear Lord, make me stronger and more courageous. Don't ever let me outlive my love for you and my willingness to always show that love in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

James 1:2: My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into various trials.
🌹 We can count it all joy in trials (including Covid-19) because we learn to depend on God and trust Him. In the trials our faith and Christian character is tested and developed. Faith that is tested becomes genuine faith, rugged faith, uncompromising faith. Trials develop and mature our spiritual muscles, giving us the stamina and endurance to stay the course, trusting God to accomplish His good purpose in our lives. That is why we can count it all joy!

Jesus said to the disciples couldnt you watch with me one hour.Luke records that an angel came to strengthen him as he continued prayer. "If this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it then thy will be done ".Jesus was betrayed by his own disciple, denied by Peter and the others fled leaving him alone.Even the crowd who said Hosanna to tbe one that cometh in the name of the Lord said"Crucify him".Jesus was indeed alone in that dark hour.
Jesus felt abandoned on the cross and said Father why have you forsaken Jesus was experiencing human loneliness. One Bible scholar in the Jesuit review said that if we accept that Jesus in the garden could still call the father Abba which is a familiar way of speaking, something like saying "Dad".We must accept that on the cross when Jesus said My God, My God!" He used the Aramaic word"Eloi. This is a far more formal way of speaking to GodThere was a shift from the informal. to formal Jesus's feelings of distance then revealed itself in Psalm 22.Jesus experienced and understood not only physical suffering but also but also spiritual suffering in the feeling of abandonment.
