Continued Prayers For Strength

Disciple of Prayer
I have broken my fast again after feeling extremely discouraged. I have fallen back into a deep depression and feel far from the Lord often crying every day and having trouble getting out of bed. I know he is near to the brokenhearted and saves those that are crushed in spirit, but I just feel like I'm alone in this and feel like giving up, however, I still feel the conviction of picking the fast back up, but I just need his strength to continue.

We hear the deep anguish in your heart, and we want you to know that you are not alone. The weight of depression and spiritual discouragement can feel crushing, but the Lord is indeed near to the brokenhearted, just as His Word promises. Psalm 34:18 tells us, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." Even when you feel far from Him, He is still close, holding you in His love.

It is not uncommon for fasting to become a struggle when our spirits are weary, but your desire to return to it is a sign of the Holy Spirit’s work in you. Fasting is not about perfection, it is about drawing nearer to God, even in weakness. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 26:41, "Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Your willingness to pick the fast back up is evidence of a heart that still seeks the Lord, and that is something to hold onto.

Depression can make even the smallest tasks feel impossible, but we encourage you to take one step at a time. Get out of bed, even if just to sit in His presence. Cry out to Him in honesty, He can handle your raw emotions. Psalm 6:6 says, "I am weary with my groaning. Every night I flood my bed. I drench my couch with my tears." You are not the first to walk this path, and the Lord does not turn away from your tears.

We must also gently remind you that your strength does not come from your own efforts, but from Christ. Philippians 4:13 declares, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." You are not relying on your own power to fast, to fight depression, or to press forward, you are relying on the One who conquered sin and death. His grace is sufficient for you, even in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who is struggling under the weight of depression and spiritual discouragement. Lord, You see every tear, every moment of weakness, and every cry for help. We ask that You would wrap Your arms around them right now, reminding them that they are never alone. Strengthen their spirit when their body and mind are weary. Renew their hope in You, for You are the God who raises the dead and calls light out of darkness.

Father, we ask that You would give them the grace to pick up their fast again, not out of obligation, but as an act of surrender to You. Help them to see that even in their weakness, Your power is made perfect. Break the chains of depression that seek to isolate them, and replace their sorrow with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Remind them that their worth is found in Christ alone, and that You are working all things together for their good (Romans 8:28).

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of despair that whispers lies of hopelessness. We declare that no weapon formed against them will prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and that You are their refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in victory, not by their own might, but by Yours.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the One who bore our sorrows and carried our griefs. May Your peace guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Do not give up, dear one. The enemy wants you to believe that your struggle is in vain, but God is using this season to draw you closer to Him. Keep crying out to Him, keep seeking His face, and trust that He will lift you up in due time. You are not forgotten. You are deeply loved. And your breakthrough is coming.

We hear you in this and we’re so sorry it’s been this heavy. When the depression grips that tightly, trouble getting out of bed, crying every day, and the awful sense that God is far away, it can feel like everything is caving in. That weight is real, and you don’t have to carry it alone or pretend it isn’t there. We’re praying with you right now, not from a distance, but alongside you in this hard place.

Something that often helps us when a spiritual practice like fasting gets tangled up in discouragement is to remember that God’s ways with us are more like training for a long race than a single test we pass or fail. You haven’t wrecked anything by breaking the fast, this is still your training ground, and your longing to pick it back up is itself a sign that the Spirit hasn’t left you. That conviction you feel isn’t a whip, it’s an invitation to begin again in a small, doable way, without piling on guilt. Maybe the next right step isn’t a full fast but simply showing up with a gentle heart, even if all you can offer is a few quiet minutes and the truth: “Lord, I’m weak and I need you.”

Because you mentioned getting out of bed is so difficult and the sadness won’t lift, we’d also gently encourage you to reach out to a doctor or a wise counselor soon. That’s not a lack of faith, it’s letting God use the help He has put in the world for us. Sometimes our brains and bodies need support, just like any other part of us, and there’s no shame in that.

For the loneliness you described, hold on to this: Christ is with the crushed in spirit not just as a comforting idea, but as a present person. He sits with you in the silence, weeps with you, and never shames you for how little you have to give right now.

Lord Jesus, thank you that you never let go of us, even when we feel completely lost. Meet our friend in this depression, hold them steady, quiet the accusing voices, and give their body and mind real rest. Restore hope where it’s gone thin, and help them take the smallest next step toward light. We ask for your gentle strength and for your presence to feel close enough to touch. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

The Lord is indeed near to the brokenhearted, and He saves those who are crushed in spirit. Yet even when that truth is held fast in the mind, the heart may still groan under a leaden weight and the tears flow freely. Do not think it strange that you feel far from God while you cry out to Him; the very fact that you weep and yearn for Him proves that His Spirit has not abandoned you. Dead men walk, indeed, but not in the way of God, they go according to the course of this world, careless and unfeeling. Your trouble, your sorrow over your broken fast, the conviction that picks at your conscience, all this is a message from God to your soul. He has not left you; the Bible is in your hand, and His Word still speaks. The Gospel preached is a message from God to you, and it is full of comfort for just such a case as yours.

You feel you have failed, that your strength is gone. So it is meant to be, for all strength apart from God is derived strength and must come to an end. He is the glory of our strength. The child of God learns, often through bitter disappointments, that in himself he is nothing, but with God in him he makes hell tremble. This breaking down, this sense of utter weakness, is the very doorstep to being strengthened in the Lord. The fast you attempted in your own resolve has crumbled, but the Lord’s strength is perfected in weakness. Tell Him honestly what you are: confess that you have no strength, no feeling, no power even to pray as you ought. Treat God truthfully. Make no pretensions, but lay bare your soul. He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse. You cannot shock Him with your emptiness; you can only prove yourself a fit candidate for His fullness.

The broken fast is not the end. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin, and the punishment due to your fainting, your backsliding, your unbelieving gloom, all of it was laid on Christ at the cross. God absolves you; from heaven your forgiveness comes. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That fresh conviction to resume the fast is not the lash of a taskmaster, but the gentle pulling of a loving Father who would draw you nearer to Himself. Do not try to pick it up again in your own power. Wait upon the Lord. Waiting means dependence, expectation, looking to Him as the eyes of a servant look to the hand of his master. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles. He will strengthen them in the Lord, with a strength that comes distinctly and directly from Himself, a share of His own power, so far as it can dwell in a creature.

You are not alone. Christ has entered into covenant with His Father concerning His people, and before ever you drew breath, you were accepted in the Beloved. You are a member of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. He holds you fast, and He hates putting away. No divorce can sever your soul from Him. Therefore, though your heart feels like a stone and your bed holds you captive, cast yourself anew upon Him. Say from the depths, "Nevertheless, I rest myself on the blood that cleanses from all sin, and I beseech Thee, O Lord, cleanse me from all unrighteousness." Cry to Him for the strength to rise, for the grace to take up the fast again, not as a work to win His favor, but as a hungry child waiting before a full table. He will answer. He will renew your strength. And in the renewing, you will learn that all the glory belongs to Him alone.

The natural feeling of the flesh rebels against hardship, and the soul is unwillingly torn from its comforts. This is not failure but the very weakness that Christ came to share. He knows you are dust; your Father understands your frame. When the rich young ruler heard a hard word and went away sorrowing, he still desired life, though another feeling held him captive. So now you weep and feel crushed, yet you have not rejected the Lord, but long for strength to continue. That longing is the breath of the Spirit within you.

Let no one, then, trouble you with harsh judgment over a fast interrupted. The Pharisees found fault with the disciples, yet the Lord did not reverse His ways to satisfy them. There is a shame that is genuine, but it would be far worse to keep a fast while being wounded in spirit and cut off from hope. Your Father knows what you need before you ask; He does not overlook His children when they are fallen into an extremity of despondency. Even an earthly father bears his child’s weakness. How much more will your heavenly Father lift you up?

You speak of loneliness, but the body of Christ cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”, much less to a heart that is broken. Your very sense of helplessness knits you more deeply to the whole Church, and to the Head who is nearest when you are most crushed. Paul, bound in chains and forsaken by friends, yet testified that the Lord stood by him and strengthened him. He learned to say, “I am enabled,” acknowledging both the divine power and his own resolution to rise again. So resolve now to resume the fast, not by your own might but by crying out for the aid so freely given.

Yet do not imagine that God stands afar off demanding perfect offerings. It is the purpose of the mind that rises as a sweet savor before Him. The smallest obedience, offered from a willing soul, becomes a sacrifice acceptable and well-pleasing. Your tears and your trouble in getting out of bed are not hidden from Him. He condescends to our infirmities, just as He did with Peter, speaking of a path he would not will because nature shrinks from suffering. But He grants the desire even as He strengthens the frame.

Therefore, let hope displace despair. Take up the fast again gently, as one who leans on the Father’s arm. The enemy would tell you that you are alone and abandoned, but the very conviction that stirs within you proves that Christ has not left you. He does always those things that please the Father, and it pleases Him to bind up the brokenhearted. Rise, then, not in your own power but in the power of Him who enables the weary, and say with the Apostle, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” The Lord will give you back your desire and bear you up with grace sufficient for each day.
