Continued prayer for peace and clarity
We have been holding your request for peace and clarity before the Lord, and we understand how wearying it is when your mind feels like an engine that will not shut off. Your honest confession touches a need that many of the Lord's people have felt, when the mind is like an engine that runs and runs and will not be still, and the very effort to take thoughts captive seems to weary you the more.
There is a precious word for you in this condition. The Lord says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Though your thoughts are restless and troubled, His thoughts toward you are settled and peaceful. They drift your way continually, for He has engraved you upon the palms of His hands, and He seeks your peace, He creates your peace, He sustains your peace. His thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are His ways your ways, for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than your ways and His thoughts than your thoughts. Your anxious thoughts cannot lift you, but His thoughts can lift you as on eagles wings into perfect peace and joyous confidence.
That peace is promised to the stayed mind. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. It is the mind which is the main thing, it will bring you daylight or midnight, peace or war. The very anxiety which arises through your being in difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty, but trust fits you to bear it. When the thoughts are clear and stayed upon Christ, fit words and quiet will not be lacking. Remember that the infinite God has thoughts of peace toward you, and as you think much upon His thoughts, your own thoughts will become thoughts of peace all the day.
Do not be discouraged because the battle is hard. To take every thought captive is indeed a struggle, and self examination alone is not sufficient. You must cry with the Psalmist, Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Bring your running thoughts to Jesus, bear your sorrow with Him, and hear the blood of Jesus whisper peace within. That peace is not the false peace which cries peace, peace where there is no peace, but the true peace which Christ has left, His own peace, bought with His blood and wrought by the Holy Spirit in the soul. Christ has made peace by His blood, and He is our peace. Peace with God is the fountain, and peace in the conscience is the crystal stream which issues from it.
We have prayed for you and do continue to pray, that the Lord who is the God of all peace would keep your mind stayed upon Himself, that He would quiet the engine of anxious thought and give you clarity to know His will and rest to do it. May He renew your peace day by day, for He is unmoved though you are troubled, and His peace passes all understanding.
May the Lord bless you with His own peace, keep your heart and mind through Christ Jesus, and cause you to awake and find that you are still with Him, precious in His sight and held fast in His thoughts of peace.
