Confusion

The experience you are describing bears the marks of spiritual attack, not divine communication. When a voice leaves you drained, confused, and questioning whether the Holy Spirit has abandoned you, you can be certain that voice is not from God. He is not the author of confusion but of peace. The enemy comes as an accuser and a deceiver, and his goal is to undermine your confidence in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

No one can genuinely declare that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. That confession itself is the proof of the Spirit’s indwelling presence. You have made that confession, so the Holy Spirit has not left you. He is given as a seal of ownership and a down payment of your full redemption. God does not vacate what He has purchased and sealed. The feeling of being drained is a tactic of the evil one, designed to make you rely on emotions rather than on the unwavering truth of God’s promise.

The Scripture tells us to test the spirits to see whether they are from God. The determining test is their witness concerning Jesus Christ. Any spirit that does not exalt Him, that does not draw you deeper into His love and Lordship, is not from God. The Holy Spirit’s primary work is to glorify Jesus, to bear witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, and to perfect His love within you. A voice hurling an accusation like “atheist” and producing a sensation of spiritual abandonment is doing the exact opposite. It is the accuser’s voice, not the Shepherd’s.

Do not labor under the intricate fears of satanic exchanges or destiny swaps. The eternal Son of God has already disarmed the powers of darkness, making a public spectacle of them through the cross. Your destiny is securely held in Christ. You have been brought into a new life of the Spirit. Instead of analyzing the darkness, fix your eyes fully on the light. The Spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet, meaning you are not to be carried away uncontrollably by these voices. You have been given authority to reject what does not come from the Father. Speak aloud the simple truth that Jesus Christ is Lord. As you do, you will be cooperating with the Holy Spirit who enables that very confession, and His peace will quiet the turmoil. Fill your mind with the Word of God, and ask the Father daily for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit. He gives the Spirit generously to those who ask, to empower you to live and think in the clarity and peace that belong to His children.
