You cry out for a hedge of thorns, and this is a right prayer drawn from the prophet. Yet understand what the thorn truly is. Wealth is a thorn, bearing no fruit, useful for nothing but to kindle the furnace and nourish the irrational passions, piercing and wounding the rational soul. So too is a sinful relationship, a deceitful desire that chokes the word and makes it unfruitful, just as the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches do. When you pray for a hedge, you ask God to break the outward supports of this sin, so that she finds no path to her lovers. This is mercy, for when we fall away from His hand, we are a bowing wall, a tottering fence, ready to be snatched by every beast.

But do not think the hedge alone is enough. What if the thorns are rooted out, yet the land remains unworked? A fence taken away leaves a prey for the boar and the wild beast, which is the Devil and all his host. The church must act, and you are right to summon the witnesses, to bring the word that is sharper than a two-edged sword. Yet be not dismayed that those willing have delayed. God’s delay is not negligence but a call to deeper repentance, lest we think the mere threat of others is what saves. Go to them again, not with a rebuke that hardens, but with the zeal that finishes the work, gently and firmly, lest she flee the church whose medicine she needs. Remember Eli: to honor a family tie above the clear command of God is to treasure up wrath not for them only, but for the silent pastor also.

The deepest rot is the one that mocks God, the secret thought that grace is a license, and this is the sin that denies the Master who bought us. You see it spreading, a sister’s child dancing in negligence, a household where the fear of God has grown cold. This is why the inner healing you seek is not a soft feeling but a radical excision. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint; from the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness. The wound must be laid open to the light of confession before it can be bound up. Pray then for the conviction of the Spirit, who does not whisper comfort to the unrepentant but proves the world wrong concerning sin. That pain is the first rain upon the hard ground.

Do not let your own soul be choked by the care of this matter. You have asked for clarity and wisdom, and this is good, but wisdom begins when we leave the issue with God after we have obeyed. You have brought the matter to the church; you have rebuked sharply where it was required. Now stand still. The hedge is His to set, the heart is His to break, the rain is His to send or withhold. Your duty is to proceed in the grace given, to flee temptation yourself, and to trust that He who began this conviction will bring it to harvest. If she repents, who knows? The door stands open. For the delay that terrifies you is also the day of salvation for the one who will yet turn and be refreshed. Amen.

The imagery of thorns in Scripture is sobering. They grow up alongside the seed and choke it, so that it never bears mature fruit. The cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desire for other things enter in and strangle what might have flourished. You are right to plead that the Lord would hedge her path with thorns until she comes to the end of herself. When every way of disobedience becomes painful and blocked, then the prodigal begins to remember the Father’s house.

Yet the thorns also warn us about the condition of a life that makes room for sin. Many within the church grow and develop to a point, but never bring forth fruit because the thorns have been allowed to remain. That is a tragedy repeated in every generation: a person who knows the truth, who may be surrounded by believers, yet whose life is slowly suffocated by hidden compromise. The deceitfulness of sin hardens the heart so gradually that the one caught in it rarely perceives the danger until it is too late. That is why you feel such urgency, and that urgency is right.

You have asked that pastors and family members would speak the Word into this situation, and that they would do so with a godly fear rather than the fear of man. That is exactly the pattern we see in the early church, the one described in the book of Acts. They did not rely on worldly methods, political influence, or compromise with the surrounding culture. They walked in purity, and when hypocrisy surfaced, they dealt with it swiftly because a little leaven leavens the whole lump. The purging of sin brought power, not a power of human manipulation but the manifest presence of God. Our hearts yearn for that kind of reality in the body today, yet we must honestly ask whether we have the capacity to handle it. The church has often been too ready to exploit God’s workings for its own ends, or to settle for an outward form that denies its sanctifying power.

Your prayer for messengers armed with the sword of the Spirit is exactly what she needs. The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It pierces, it convicts, it divides soul and spirit. When four people indicate a willingness to bring Scripture to bear, the delay is troubling. The prophet Jeremiah pronounced a curse on anyone who does the work of the Lord negligently. It is a fearful thing to brandish the sword and then leave it in the scabbard while someone continues down the path to destruction. Pray that the zeal they professed would be matched by action, and that they would speak the truth in love, neither harshly nor weakly, but with the kind of gentleness that springs from a clear-eyed recognition of their own vulnerability to sin.

The situation with her sister also reveals how deeply a tolerance for sensuality can embed itself in a family. When those who should model godliness instead display dances that stir up lust, the leaven spreads. Your sharp rebuke was appropriate, yet it must be paired with a tangible demonstration of what it looks like to hate evil and cling to what is good. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; it cannot coexist with a secret admiration for the world’s polluted streams.

Do not lose heart in asking for inner healing and clarity. The heart is sick, as the prophet said, and from the sole of the foot to the crown of the head there is no soundness. Only the Great Physician can heal the wounds sin has inflicted. The Shepherd restores the soul. Continue to seek that restoration for her, for yourself, and for all who are entangled. Fasting is a gift that sharpens spiritual perception and breaks yokes, but it is not a lever to force God’s hand. It is a posture of humility that says, “I depend on You utterly.”

Above all, keep your own heart anchored. When you look at the sad history of the church, it is easy to become embarrassed and even cynical. The church has been corrupted again and again by worldly systems, by the adoption of pagan forms baptized with Christian names, and by the legislating of outward religion while the heart remains untransformed. But the true church is where Jesus walks among the lampstands, and to five out of seven He called for repentance. He still calls His people to return to their first love, to shun the depths of Satan, to hold fast. That same call goes out to her: perchance she will repent and escape the snare of the devil, being taken captive to do his will. That hope hangs on the word “perchance,” for God grants repentance, and we cannot manufacture it. Yet we ask, we knock, we persist.

So pray on. Pray that the hedge becomes so thick she can no longer find her lovers. Pray that any plans for secret meetings would be frustrated at every turn. Even more, pray that the eyes of her understanding would be enlightened to see that all her attempts to find life apart from Christ are mere cisterns that hold no water. When she confesses her adultery without excuse or blame shifting, then the fruit of true repentance will appear. Healing follows confession. Who knows what God might do? With Him, redemption is always possible.

And as you wait, walk in love toward her and toward all involved, not a soft love that winks at sin, but the love that will not let the beloved perish without warning. The goal is not merely to stop outward sin but to see her pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with a pure heart alongside those who call on the Lord. That is a fellowship free from the thorns that choke. Stand firm, remain in the Word, and trust that the Lord knows exactly how to deliver the godly out of temptation.

It is clear how fervently you have sought the Lord’s intervention—pleading for conviction, protection, repentance, and the hedge of thorns around a wandering soul, while also crying out for wisdom, clarity, and inner healing for yourself and others involved. Your prayers have been rooted in Scripture, persistent in faith, and unwavering in love, even when the weight of the situation feels overwhelming.

We continue to lift up every detail before the throne of grace: that the family and church would rise up in godly fear, that the pastors and friends would act with courage and love, and that the deception of sin would be exposed by the piercing light of God’s Word. We pray the Holy Spirit would bring deep conviction, that repentance would come swiftly, and that the snare of the enemy would be broken. May the Lord surround this precious one with thorns that turn her back to Him, and may she find refuge in the Shepherd who leads beside still waters and restores the soul.
