I've been struggling with negative thoughts about church lately. Also, I have been posting recently about spiritual warfare that I have experienced since I was a child which influences people in my life to do abnormally negative things to me to push me toward deep unforgiveness. God delivered me out of this warfare and the unforgiveness it caused (and which also kept it in my life) this past year. However, some problems do still occur with me struggling with unforgiveness and bitterness and even hatred which I have been really struggling with in the past week or so. Also, this warfare often still tries to flare up at certain times. Well, I do sometimes experience this warfare in terms of church with people at church suddenly behaving abnormally negative toward me and being obviously remorseful afterward (I find these problems occur a lot after I take communion which has caused me to have anxiety now when I take it). But with this warfare, there are some people (both outside and inside of church) who I feel Satan uses to really test me and my ability to trust in how God is directing me to deal with this warfare - for example, there are some people who persist in the evil behavior that this warfare influences them toward even when it is lessening which then makes me start questioning the truth that God has exposed which is that their behavior is rooted in this spiritual warfare regardless. There are some people at church who I have experienced problems with this warfare with who this has happened with. For example, there is one woman who I had an experience with in terms of this warfare who I now have not seen return to church for a really long time which is very unusual and I truly believe that it is due to this warfare (I know this sounds speculative but please trust me as I've been dealing with this long warfare enough to know how it operates). I believe there are also similar issues that I have experienced at church like this as well. Please pray for me about all this. Thank you.
Church and spiritual warfare
We hear your heart and the deep struggle you’ve been walking through, and we stand with you in prayer and truth. First, we must address the weight of unforgiveness, bitterness, and even hatred that you’ve carried. Scripture is clear: *"Looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it"* (Hebrews 12:15). These emotions are not just personal struggles—they are footholds the enemy uses to keep you bound. But God has delivered you before, and He will do it again. We rebuke the spirit of unforgiveness in Jesus’ name and command it to loose its grip on your heart. You are not responsible for the evil others have done, but you *are* responsible for your response. *"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you"* (Ephesians 4:32). This is not a suggestion—it is a command, and it is for *your* freedom.
The attacks you describe at church, especially after communion, are not coincidences. Communion is a sacred act of remembrance and unity with Christ, and the enemy *hates* it. But do not fear—*"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"* (Psalm 27:1). When anxiety rises, declare the truth: *"He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world"* (1 John 4:4). We pray that God would give you discernment to recognize these attacks for what they are—distractions from the enemy—and that you would not shrink back from participating in communion out of fear. Instead, prepare your heart beforehand with prayer and the Word, and trust that God’s presence is your protection.
We also want to gently challenge the speculation about others’ absences or motives. While spiritual warfare is real, we must be careful not to assume we fully understand what God is doing in someone else’s life. *"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?"* (Jeremiah 17:9). Our role is not to diagnose others but to walk in love, extend grace, and trust God’s sovereignty. If you feel led, you could reach out in love to those you’re concerned about—but do so with humility, not accusation.
For those who persist in harmful behavior, we pray for your heart to remain steadfast in the truth God has shown you. The enemy will try to make you doubt, but remember: *"No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the Lord’s servants, and their righteousness is from Me," says the Lord* (Isaiah 54:17). You are not responsible for their choices, but you *are* responsible for guarding your heart. If necessary, seek wise counsel from a pastor or mature believer who can help you navigate these relationships with biblical wisdom.
Finally, we must address the foundation of your faith. It is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not already, we encourage you to examine your heart and ensure that your trust is fully in Christ alone for salvation. The enemy will try to shake your faith in every area, but Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Cling to Him.
