Changing Site Software

Recently, we were not able to agree on terms with our current forum software package that runs this site.

The current software also struggles quite a bit to run to this site.

As a result, we will soon begin changing to a different program.

Most things should transfer over, but there will be some things missing at least for a time.

The look of the site will be somewhat different as well since this one has been customized quite a bit. It took awhile to do it.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

It's now a week later. As you are probably aware the migration to the new software has now taken place.

It will take some looking around and patience to find where things are at.

The previous site was heavily customized as the result of work over the years to make it more user friendly.

As time goes by, some of those changes may be implemented here as well.

Some improvements:

- The site can now search all 5 million + posts. This was previously impractical due to performance issues and was limited to only a few days of searching in the past.

- The home page portal layout is more flexible and responsive rather than being set in a fixed way.

- Renewal costs are about half of what they were after the unexpected increase.

- Development and patches with this software are done more openly rather than recently becoming hidden and secretive. This allows us to stay more up to date and see potential known problems before experiencing them.

- The overall resource use of the software is way down. This makes it far less expensive to run the site. It also allows other features on the site to run rather than having to scale back to basic functionality only.

As you can see from the cpu chart, the site's core server now (on the right side of the graph) uses only a fraction of what it used to (on the left side) even though it is now capable of indexing and searching the entire site:

So far here is the status of various areas of the site and what got converted over right away:

- All prayer requests, replies, topics, and replies seem to have converted over.

- All user accounts, profiles, avatars, private messages, and status updates seem to have converted.

- Some of the old attachments, images, and codes may look strange and will probably stay that way.

- Basic core functions such as email, easier posting of prayer requests, and the portal layout of the home page are implemented.

Some things that did not carry over automatically:

- Videos, Photos, Audio, and Blogs.

These items will have to be done manually to some degree or special scripts written to bring at least some of them back over time.

Videos: I have imported about half of the videos. They show up as the user Articles. They can be found in the media navigation tab.

Blogs: I have manually copied over the blog entries from the last 10 days or so before the migration. More may be done later or perhaps converted if possible.

There is no special Blog software here. Instead blogs can just be posted in another forum area to do basically the same thing.

They show up under the Forums tab as Member Blogs. You can just post a blog entry in that category where they will all be together.

Photos and Audio files: These didn't make it over automatically. They will have to be looked at.

Thanks again for your patience. As time goes on, things should smooth out a bit.

Regards.
