It is a small matter to some, this concern over what your pets consume, yet it is in these very trifles that our faith is often tested in the way of childlike trust in Providential guidance. He who travels on the King's Highway is under the King's protection, but he who takes to byroads must protect himself. Cast this care upon Him who maintains continual possession of all His creation, for this farm is kept what it is, as well as made what it is, by God's continual protection. You have covered my head in the day of armor, and even the creatures under your roof are beneath the shadow of that same covering. Cease from the fretting which makes you cumbered about many things. I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor, and does not this extend to the least of His works? Surely the upright shall give thanks unto Your name, expecting protection for body, for beast, and for all that pertains to them. Let this anxiety be displaced by praise predicted.

You have done well to bring this concern to the church, for even in small matters we should seek God's mercy. The donut given to your cats is like a thorn among food: it bears no proper nourishment and can wound those who consume it. Just as luxury makes even dumb beasts sickly and burdens them, so unsuitable food may bring harm. But do not despair; the Great Physician can quickly restore health, just as He released the publican from his fever. Pray with faith, and trust that He who cares for the sparrows will preserve your pets from injury. Yet let this also teach you and your household vigilance. We must not pamper the body with what is superfluous, for sufficiency alone is true nourishment and pleasure. Instead of relying on charms, place these creatures under the protection of the Cross, and remind the one who gave it that even irrational animals suffer from our intemperance. May God turn away all harm, and grant you wisdom to care well for what He has entrusted to you.
