I just posted this: "I did not know that I forgot to put my pets' water bowl out in their room this afternoon when I finished cleaning and they went maybe eleven hours without water although they had food that was moistened with water which I didn't forget to give them that. I don't know how I could have done this but I'm very upset. They seem fine but please just pray about all this. There's so much going on in my life. I'm so upset that this happened." I keep a bowl of cold salted ice in their room to try to cut down on the terrible heat this summer because I heard it helps when you place it in front of a fan and I think one of my cats may have gotten confused and drunk out of this bowl as it melted since there was no regular water. Please pray that if this is the case, it will not harm any of my cats if they did this. Please pray about the whole situation. Thank you.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 12:10, "A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." He will never allow the righteous to be moved." We encourage you to release this worry to Him, trusting that He watches over all His creation, including your precious cats.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, lifting up this dear one and their beloved pets. Lord, You are the Creator of all living things, and You hold every creature in Your care. We ask for Your mercy and protection over these cats, that no harm would come to them from this oversight. If they drank from the salted ice water, we pray it would not affect their health, and we trust in Your healing power to guard them. Father, we also ask for Your peace to settle over this situation. Comfort this heart that is heavy with regret, and remind them of Your unfailing love. Help them to cast their anxieties on You, knowing You are faithful to sustain them. Strengthen their focus and clarity in the midst of life’s demands, and let this moment serve as a reminder of Your grace, which covers even our mistakes. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

The fretting of your heart over these small creatures is not unnoticed by the Lord who sees every sparrow that falls. You are bowed down with a sense of having failed them, and this weighs upon you all the more heavily because there is already much upon your spirit. Yet it is precisely in seasons of such heaviness that the enemy would have you fix your gaze upon your own shortcomings, magnifying an oversight into a mountain of guilt. The Lord looks upon those who feel their guilt, and a Savior is on the lookout for sinners quite as much as sinners are on the lookout for a Savior.

Your immediate fear that a cat may have drunk from the salted bowl is one to lay before the throne and then leave there. If you could do any good by worrying, then worry to your heart's content; but as it is useless, find it best to let it alone. The loving Father who gave these creatures their instinct can preserve them from what would harm them, and even if they did lap a little of that water, He is able to shield them from injury. Pray, and then rest.

But let me press through this anxious circumstance to the deeper need of your own soul. You cry out that there is so much going on in your life, and this small forgetfulness has become the drop that makes your cup run over. See in this a picture of our condition when guile and guilt are still at work within us. Before grace makes us true, we hush the protests of conscience and will not confess the full heinousness of our state. But when guilt is forgiven and the Spirit removes guile, the forgiven one undergoes a change of nature, he confesses all, heartily humbles himself, and takes the lowest place. Are you not there, bowed low, confessing your very self as altogether unworthy? This is the posture where blessedness begins. If by faith you can believe in the sin-forgiving God and accept the matchless Atonement which covers all your guilt, then you are even now among the blessed.

The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin. Do not let the haziness of your views of the Atonement breed darkness of spirit. This is the comfort of all believers: your guilt was laid on Him and all your sin is gone forever, it cannot be brought against you. The guilt of this small matter, the guilt of a thousand weightier cares, the guilt of a lifetime of failures, all laid on Him. Fly to Christ as doves to the dovecot, that you may be in safety there. Let your soul be quiet, not because the water bowl is filled again, but because the great debt is fully cancelled and the Lord thinks upon you still. He will sustain you through every tangled trial that presses upon your life. Cast it all, great and small, upon Him.

You are distressed over the water forgotten for your cats, and you fear the salted ice may have harmed them. Yet consider this: if God clothes the grass of the field and feeds the birds of the air, will He not care for these creatures who depend on you? Your anxiety, though born of love, has become a snare. You reproach yourself as if their well‑being rested solely upon your shoulders. But who gave them life? Who sustains every living thing? You did not create them, nor can you add a single hour to their span by your worry.

Do you not see that this fretting is a kind of temptation? To cast yourself down into despair over an oversight is to act as though God’s mercy were small. You did not purposely withhold water; you fed them moistened food. The salt, if they tasted it, is but a little thing. Have you forgotten how many creatures drink from bitter pools and live? The Lord who made salt to preserve and purify can also preserve these small lives from a few drops. But you are so troubled by what might happen that you lose sight of the Physician who heals both body and soul.

I do not say this to belittle your care, but to lift your eyes higher. You say there is much going on in your life, and you are overwhelmed. This is the root: the heart is crowded with many concerns, and a single mistake becomes a mountain. You are like one who shakes out his garment for moths but neglects the soul’s adornment. What does this perturbation profit? It cannot undo the past; it only steals the peace Christ gives. The rich man in torment longed for a drop of water, but you have been given living water and yet you thirst from fear. Do not let love for these creatures, which is good, become an idol that enslaves you to anxiety.

Imitate Abraham, who left his country at a word. Leave behind this frantic need to control every outcome. Trust them into God’s hand. If you have sinned by negligence, confess it simply and let it go. Do not rehearse the fault endlessly, as though Christ’s pardon were insufficient. The apostle teaches that we are not to be effeminate in declining toils, and one of those toils is the discipline of bearing our own frailty without despairing. You are but dust; mistakes will come. Will you magnify them above the cross?

Pray, yes. But pray with confidence, not with the agitation of one who has no hope. Ask for protection for your cats, and then be at peace. If you must act, give them fresh water now and observe them calmly. But do not let the enemy use this small matter to rob you of your reason. The same devil who tempted Christ to throw Himself down also whispers to you that all is lost because of a bowl of water. Resist him. Consider the vanity of excessive earthly attachments: even these beloved pets will one day perish, but your soul is eternal. Set your mind on the City above, where there is no thirst, no heat, and no fear.

Rise up, then, from this pit of self‑accusation. Read the Scriptures, which are a mirror of true virtue, and there see how many saints stumbled and were restored. God is not served by your turmoil but by your trust. Cast this care upon Him, and let your heart be silent before His providence. The flame of anxiety is extinguished not by endless thought but by willing surrender. Only cease from feeding it, and it will die.

You are carrying a heavy weight right now, and I can hear the distress in your words. When we love our animals, even a small oversight can feel like a monumental failure, especially when life is already pulling us in so many directions. Please hear this gently: the guilt that is flooding your heart does not have to define this moment.

There is a picture I return to often, from the wilderness journey of Israel. The people were thirsty, and God told Moses to speak to the rock. Water gushed out, enough for everyone. That rock, Scripture tells us, was Christ. He was struck once for us, and now the living water flows freely to any who will simply ask in faith. When our souls feel dry and our nerves are frayed, we do not have to beat ourselves up to get relief. We speak to Him. We tell Him we forgot the bowl. We tell Him we are afraid. And He gives what we really need: His peace, His forgiveness, His steady presence. You do not have to be perfect; you just have to come.

The fear about the salted ice water is understandable, but do not let it become a bitter cup that you keep drinking. God designed these creatures with remarkable resilience. A small amount of melted salt water, if they even took any, is unlikely to harm them. Watch them with a quiet eye, and trust the same Maker who gave them their instincts and their thirst mechanisms. He sees every sparrow that falls, and He sees your cats tonight.

What worries me more is the weight you mentioned, the "so much going on." When Moses tried to carry every burden alone, his father-in-law warned him plainly: "You will surely wear yourself out." God never intended one person to hold up the whole sky. He gave us limits, and forgetting a water bowl in a season of overload is not a moral failure; it is a signal that you are stretched beyond your own capacity. Be gentle with yourself. Ask for help where you can. Lay some things down, even the smaller worries, and let your mind rest. The Lord who made the heavens and the earth does not slumber, and He does not demand that you never falter.

Remember the disciples on the Sea of Galilee. The storm was so violent that waves crashed over the boat, and they were sure they were going under. They woke Jesus, and He quieted the wind with a word. But before any of that, He had already said, "Let us go over to the other side." He did not say, "Let us go halfway and sink." His word stands. You will get through this tangled season, not because you are handling it flawlessly, but because He is with you in the boat.

Do not let guilt fester. The enemy loves to whisper that we must be punished for our mistakes, to make us carry a load Jesus already bore. Instead, confess it simply to the Lord, receive His cleansing, and then leave it. Do something kind for yourself tonight. Eat something. Drink some cool water. Let your body remember that your Father provides for you as surely as He provides for the animals He placed under our care.

When you feel the panic rising, take a deep breath and say, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." He will lead you beside still waters, and He will restore your soul. Your cats will be fine. You, too, will be fine, because you are held by a grace that never runs dry.
