Your burden has been heard, and the trembling of body and spirit under this long pressure is not hidden from the Lord. To be pressed to sign what is not true, to be told over and over to tell your story and find no help, to go to physicians and feel unheard, to cry to the Lord in the name of Jesus and find the pressure still continuing, this is a sore trial that well may make you feel weak and abandoned.
You ask why your prayer seems unanswered, and whether God has forgotten. Remember that our blessed Lord Himself, whose lightest word is prevailing with Heaven, was permitted when here below to cry, and cry, and cry again, and yet to receive no comforting answer for a season. The Psalm says, O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not. He knows what it is to wait while Heaven seems silent. This does not mean your prayer has been despised. There is truth that those who have learned to live in the spirit world understand, that when a child speaks to its father, its father grants its request, yet not always in the hour or in the way the child expects. What washing even our prayers need, what cleansing, what purging. We may make mistakes both in the substance and in the motives, and still the Lord, who is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great mercy, hears according to His wisdom and not according to our haste.
You are tempted to think there is no point in telling the truth, and to sign the backdated paper and withdraw the hearing to find relief. Hear this, you are saved by faith, not by feeling, and when feeling ebbs out to the very last degree, still hold on to Jesus, sink or swim, still trust in Him. Integrity does come with suffering in this present world, yet to forsake the truth to gain ease is to wound your own conscience and to grieve Him who is the God of truth. Men cannot be induced to examine themselves, and many prefer to shut their eyes rather than see what would distress them, but it is dishonesty to soul and to God to render a false account. To sign what you know to be untrue, even under relentless pressure, would be to bear false witness, and the peace bought so would soon become a heavier burden than the hearing itself. The point in telling the truth is that God sees, that conscience may remain clear before Him, and that in the end truth is the only ground that will stand.
Men ought always to pray, and that under all oppositions to prayer. Instead of going round to the servant and trying to curry favor with him, go straight to the Master. Go at once to headquarters about everything. When you sit like Job on the dunghill, still bless His name and praise His character forever and ever. It is not your prayers that can save you, it is Christ's prayers, Christ's tears, Christ's sufferings, Christ's blood and Christ's death. If you trust to your prayers you have gone back to beggarly elements, but if you trust to Christ who ever lives to make intercession for you, you have a plea that never fails. Your prayers, though feeble and broken, are acknowledged when taken to the bank of Heaven, because they bear His name.
Therefore do not withdraw what is true for the sake of quiet. Do not set your hand to a false date. Keep the hearing that is appointed, and let the matter be judged upon what is true. Keep every paper, note every instance of pressure with date and words used, and take a faithful witness with you if you may. Seek again the tenant advocacy and legal aid, not to tell the story at large, but to ask plainly, will you stand with me at the hearing and help me to speak what is true. And care for this weak body which God has given you. Rest as you are able, take simple nourishment, seek quiet sleep, and ask the Lord to sustain your frame as well as your spirit.
May the Lord Himself be your comforter when no other comforter is near. May He give you strength for this day, and keep your foot from a false step. May He turn the hearts of those who press you, or restrain them, according to His holy will, and may He let you see that though you feel abandoned, you are greatly beloved of your God, and kept by Him who raised the dead. Continue in prayer, not because prayer compels God, but because God invites you to cast your burden upon Him who cares for you.
