Can Christ salvage my sexual brokenness ?

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I am a broken woman from my sexual past (nothing crazy but still). I am neither pure nor whole anymore. I’ve not had intercourse in ### years and don’t plan to again. I crave true love, to feel pure and whole again in a relationship. Is this still possible for me?

We hear the ache and honesty in your heart and we thank you for sharing it so openly with us. We want you to know without any doubt that yes, Christ can absolutely salvage, heal, and restore your sexual brokenness. There is no past that is beyond His redeeming blood and no brokenness that He cannot make whole.

We understand why you feel neither pure nor whole anymore, but we want to gently correct how you are seeing yourself. When we belong to Jesus, our purity and wholeness are not determined by our sexual past, but by His finished work on the cross. Scripture tells us If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. And also Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow Isaiah 1:18. You are not damaged goods in the eyes of God. If you have repented and put your faith in Christ, you have been washed, you have been sanctified, you have been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus 1 Corinthians 6:11. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new 2 Corinthians 5:17. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus Romans 8:1.

He not only forgives, He heals the brokenhearted. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3 and He promises Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me Psalm 51:10. That clean heart is what He gives you, not because you earned it back, but because He paid for it. We also cling to His promise that I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten Joel 2:25. What feels lost or stained, He can restore.

We rejoice to hear that you have not had intercourse in many years and we affirm your desire to remain celibate. That is exactly what God calls us to outside of marriage, for we are told Flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18 and to honor Him with our bodies. Your choice to abstain is holy and pleasing to Him.

We do want to lovingly address two things you shared. First, you said you do not plan to ever have intercourse again and that you crave to feel pure and whole again in a relationship. We understand that desire may come from hurt or shame, and we want to gently remind you that true purity and wholeness do not come from a relationship, even a good one, but from Christ Himself. No human love can make you whole, only Jesus can, and then from that wholeness you can love well. Second, if God in His mercy brings a godly husband into your life, sexual intimacy within marriage is not something to fear or to forever withhold. It is a beautiful, pure gift designed by God. Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled Hebrews 13:4. It would not make you impure again, within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman it is holy and good. So we encourage you not to make a permanent vow against it out of shame, but to entrust your future to the Lord and remain open to His will, whether that is continued celibacy in singleness or the intimacy of a Christ centered marriage.

We also hear your craving for true love. That craving is God given, and we pray that God will fulfill it in His perfect way and timing. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, and we encourage you to see any future relationship not as simply dating or finding a partner, but as prayerful courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer who will love you as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25. A godly spouse will not see you as broken or less than, but as a sister in Christ, cherished, forgiven, and made new.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this precious daughter to You. We thank You that she is Yours and that You see her not through the lens of her past but through the blood of Your Son. Lord, wash her again with the assurance of Your forgiveness and help her to truly receive that she is clean, white as snow, and a new creation in You. Heal her brokenness, bind up her wounds, and create in her a clean heart. Remove all shame and condemnation and let her know how deeply she is loved and valued by You. Restore to her the joy of her salvation and the sense of wholeness that only You can give. Guard her in purity as she waits on You, and if it is Your will, bring into her life a godly man who loves You first and who will love her with sacrificial, faithful, and pure love in holy marriage. Prepare her heart and his, and lead them both in Your perfect timing. Give her peace, hope, and confidence that her future is not limited by her past, for with You all things are made new. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Redeemer, amen.

We encourage you to continue to walk closely with Jesus, to stay rooted in His Word, to be part of a faithful Bible believing community, and to let Him be the One who defines you. You are pure in Christ, you are whole in Christ, and your story is not over. God still writes beautiful redemption stories, and He can write one for you.

We hear the ache in your question, and we want you to know you are not disqualified from love or from wholeness because of your past.

Wanting to feel pure and whole again is a deep and good desire. In Christ, purity is not something you have to earn back piece by piece - it is something He gives. And wholeness does not mean you will feel perfect or never wrestle with memories again. It grows gradually as you walk with Him, learning to see yourself as He sees you, rather than through shame or old labels.

Your choice to live abstinently these past years is a healthy and dignified one, not something that harms you. It can be a quiet way to honor God and yourself while He does this deeper healing work in you.

One step that often helps is not carrying these questions alone. Would you consider meeting regularly with one trusted, mature Christian woman or a pastor who can listen without judgment and walk with you over time? Healing from sexual brokenness tends to happen in safe, consistent relationship, not just in private thought.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift this dear sister to You in Jesus' name. Thank You that You see her fully and love her completely. Wash away shame where it still clings, and gently restore her sense of worth and wholeness in You. Give her wisdom for the future, peace for today, and trusted people to walk beside her. Lead her into the true love and life You have for her, according to Your will. Amen.

The question you have brought is one that many a wounded heart has brought before the Lord, and the answer of the gospel is plenteous redemption.

You ask if Christ can salvage your sexual brokenness and make you pure and whole again. Hear what the Word declares, that redemption is our chief blessing, nothing better can be said of you than this, you are bought with a price. Redemption is a greater mercy than creation, and it is the best wine kept unto the last. It gives effect to all the other great blessings of God. What Christ came to do, He did not do in part. The redemption shall be complete, not a hoof shall be left behind. Whatever His design was in dying, that design cannot be frustrated nor disappointed.

There are three parts to this redemption which may well make your heart rejoice. The first is redemption by blood. Man had sinned against his God and God the Just One must punish sin, and Christ gave His life a ransom for many. His redemption is made with His precious blood, and that blood was on the lintel and the two side posts of the house of every family of Israel. This is the blood red mark of our separation from the world, effectual redemption by the Lord Jesus Christ. If you would have the last redemption, begin with the first. Faith first. Look to the price, to the blood.

The second is redemption by power. Those for whom the Savior shed His blood and so redeemed them by price, are by and by redeemed by power. The Holy Spirit graciously gives you the redemption which is by power, and in due time separation from the world comes out more fully in sanctification. The third is redemption in perfection, when the body itself will be redeemed and rise from the dead.

You say you are neither pure nor whole anymore. Know this, that holiness before God is not mere moral propriety or an unblemished past that you can present. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord, yet charity without purity will be of no use. Purity and charity are the two great garments of Christianity. True purity is not that you have never fallen, but that you are washed in the blood of the Lamb and then walk in the way of holiness by His Spirit. O believing sinner, what a sweet comfort it is for you, that there is plenteous redemption, and that you have a lot in it. Your needs you can scarce tell, but this redemption you cannot tell, for it is compendious and plenteous. It covers all your sin, all your brokenness, all your past.

Some rejoice in a redemption which does not redeem, but the foundation of all our hope is redemption money of pure and precious metal that does not lose weight in the fire. The dwelling place of the Lord is founded on atonement. The redemption of the soul is precious. Christ has not left you to remain broken. He makes whole.

Your present purpose to abstain is right and good in the sight of God, for sex and living together belong within marriage alone, which is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman. Keep that holy resolve, not as a way to earn purity, but as the fruit of being redeemed and set apart. Your craving for true love is not wrong when it desires to be pure and whole again in that holy covenant. Whether the Lord in His providence gives you that gift of marriage or calls you to walk whole and pure before Him as you are, you can be whole now in Christ, for you are justified and reckoned as just through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.

May the Holy Spirit teach you to value this great redemption. Look to Jesus Christ alone for salvation, trust His blood, and ask Him to sanctify you and keep you. He is able to make you pure, to make you whole, and to present you without spot before His Father.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Christ can indeed save and restore you, and what you long for, to be pure and whole again, is possible in Him.

You say you are neither pure nor whole anymore because of your past. Scripture teaches that holiness is that without which no one shall see the Lord, and that holiness is not only abstaining from fornication and adultery, though chastity is properly called holiness, but a purity of the whole heart. For blessed are the pure in heart, and by the pure He means those who are in every way pure, cleansed from envy, deceit, and every sin, for all sin is uncleanness and every virtue is purity.

That purity is not something you can earn back by waiting or by your own resolve, though your resolve to abstain from intercourse outside of marriage is right and good. It is something Christ creates anew. Man is created henceforth not of earth but in righteousness and holiness of truth. This takes place when we are made sons through Him, through baptism and faith in Jesus Christ alone. There was of old a figure of righteousness and holiness, but in Christ there is the truth itself. He does not patch the old, He makes you new, so that you are not defined by what has been but by who you are in Him. He earnestly desires that you may receive, and He does all that He may give to you.

So you are not ruined beyond repair. In Christ you can be made truly pure and truly whole again, not because you erase the past, but because He washes and renews the heart.

That wholeness is yours first in Him, whether or not He brings a relationship into your life. And if He does bring true love, true love in the Christian sense is not simply a feeling that makes you feel whole, but a love that is without pretense, warm and honoring, where each seeks to prefer the other, and where peace is followed with all. In God's design that love finds its home in marriage, a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, where living together and the gift of sex belong. It is there, and only there, that the craving for intimacy is fulfilled in holiness.

Continue as you have begun, in holiness and in peace. Do not return to what you have left, but keep your heart with Christ, seek Him in His Word, in prayer, and among His people. Ask Him to make your heart pure, to establish you in faith and love, and to guide your desire for love according to His will. If it is His will to give you marriage, pray that He will provide a faithful man who loves Christ and will love you as Christ loves the church, and that you may enter that covenant in purity. If He keeps you in singleness for a season, know that you can still be complete and beloved in Him.

You are not without hope. Bring your brokenness to Jesus, confess all to Him, and trust that He who made you can remake you in righteousness and holiness of truth, and make you worthy according to His grace to see the Lord.
