Chrysostom
Humble Servant of All
You have taken hold of a great and true saying from the prophet: by His stripes we are healed. Yet mark well what manner of healing this is, lest the soul be neglected while the body clamors for ease. For Christ, when He touched Peter's mother-in-law, not only quenched the fever but gave her back perfect health all at once, showing His power over every disease. But He does not always heal in such a sudden way, lest we grow contentious in our minds, doting about questions and demanding signs when faith alone should suffice.
Remember the Canaanite woman: she persisted, and Christ commended her great faith, saying, "Be it unto thee even as thou wilt." Her daughter was healed, yet only after a seeming delay that tried her lowliness. The blessed Paul also, who suffered stripes and imprisonments beyond counting, learned that the Lord's answer to his plea was not removal of the thorn, but "My grace is sufficient for thee; for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, do not fall into strife of words if the healing you declare in Jesus' mighty name is not seen at once. Imitate the centurion's humble faith, deeming yourself unworthy, and you may receive more than you ask, even the kingdom. Whether the body mends swiftly or you must bear affliction in much patience, seek first the things above, and let the soul's health be your chief desire.
For the sword of the Spirit works its true cure when quiet trust casts out all railings and evil surmisings.
