To prepare a room for the spraying of pests, and you ask for wisdom to move things properly, this is a small, homely duty, and it is right to seek the Lord’s mind even in little matters, for without wisdom man is as the wild ass’s colt, wasting strength. Yet let this outward task stir a deeper question within your soul: is there a preparation for that great day when the last breath is drawn, and all is fixed and settled? You will not be found ready then by a mere name to live, nor by a bustling about with outward things, while the heart lies indifferent to the cause of God. There must be a preparation in us, a work not of our own strength, for the fierce lion knows not the way of wisdom, but a work of supplication and true faith.
Press home the grave question: have you looked unto Christ and been saved? That is the highest act of wisdom on the part of man. Go, then, and tend to your pets’ room with prayerful diligence, but let every moved chair and swept corner whisper to your conscience, am I prepared for Heaven, sealed with that sacred token which proves the truth of the preparation? Do not be afraid to be happy in a good hope through grace, but do not be deceived; ask the Omniscient eyes to lay your heart bare.

The preparation of your home and the care for your creatures are not small matters, for even in the moving of a corner and the sweeping of a floor, the grace of God is able to teach us. You ask for wisdom, and rightly so, but do not be troubled as those who have no hope, reckoning up every anxious thought days before. That wisdom which is from above is not anxious, but in quietness and love orders all things well. Go then, not trusting in your own cleverness, but lifting your heart in simplicity, asking God to order your steps. For He who gave you the care of these little lives will not fail to guide your hands. Do the work with diligence, yet without fretfulness, and let all you move be moved in love, as unto the Lord. Then, when the task is done, you shall find your mind fed with a peace better than the feast of the careful host, for you have made God your debtor by casting every care upon Him.
